M1710 Piece of s****

Ok so I have had my m1710 since Dec of 06. I picked it up to have a portable desktop replacement for my work as I am a 3d modeler.

I got the core 2 duo 7200 2.0ghz w/ 2 gigs ram 160 gig and the 7950gtx.

So i upgraded to 4 gigs ram to help with my work.

Anyways. I've had 3 fans die on me, the mobo fried and it killed the battery.

They replaced the mobo but not the battery because they said it was outside of the 1 year warranty on that.

So 6 months later and I'm having issues again. Video corruption, over heating, crashing due to heat. Just all kinds of issues to prevent me from using my laptop for work.

I have the max warranty on this thing for 4 years with accidental damage and the works.

So here I am dealing with Dell again and losing work.

Also they want me to flash my bios but since the battery doesn't charge above 10% that is impossible. So WTF!

You guys got any suggestions?

buy a new battery, it is just something you have to do every 2 years or so

btw, i had tons of problems with my m1710, tons!!

it took me about a year to finally get my m1730 to replacement, you just need to constantly complain about legit problems to make any headway

sorry man but your video card is likely going to eat itself sooner or later... and i would bank on the sooner. just pray you are inside the warranty otherwise its easier to throw away the machine.

dell just isnt what it once was and the m1710 seems to be a flawed design, it and the m170 both had a nasty habit of cooking themselves. its worse in the m1710 and dells only fix is to just replace parts and hope it gets better

Yeah the battery i'm not so worried about but the constant replacement of video cards and mobos is becoming annoying.

I spent a pretty good amount of cash on this thing as you guys are well aware and for that price could have had one hell of a crazy desktop setup.

I have till december of 2010 on my warranty.

What did you guys have to do to get a replacement model finally?

i actually loved my m1710, when it worked flawlessly... mine had a constant shut down problem, it was due to heat but for whatever reason dell could not fix it. it had 6 gpu, 4 mobs, 4 hd, 6 sets of fans, 3 lcd (maybe more, cant remember) and various other things. it took loots of time and effort to finnally get dell to replace, and that was not so good either because i got a worse off brick from them, so i demanded a newly built laptop and i got a 1730. to be honest, i hate the m1730! it is ridiculously ugly, fat, heavy and i have the 8700's which suck worse than my previous gpu. not happy, i would have rather had a working m1710...

I've been using my M1710 without incident for the past 1.5 years. I love it.

Sorry for all your bad luck.

What did you guys have to do to get a replacement model finally? Besides dropping this thing into the pool, having a shelf fall on it, or a 3 year old drop kicking it?
the parts they are replacing will keep failing, along with other smaller ones. in my time with an m1710 i went through having prettymuch every part except the lcd and hard drive replaced. what finally killed it was the video card died. sadly my warranty was up 2 weeks before that point, and despite having complained to dell about heat issues before the warranty was up they still refused to fix it. so now im using a toshiba i pirated from my parents company while i decide what kind of other machine i want, but it wont be another dell.

after a whole lot of scamming that went on in the past dell isnt so quick with replacement machines anymore. basically you have to go through hell and back with it and make a ton of calls (all about legit issues) and then if you are really lucky dell will take pity on you and maybe give you something that works. that is assuming you are still under warranty, after warranty support is basically garbage.

Thanks for all the insight guys. I'm just gonna have to keep bugging these guys over and over again until I get what I want out of all this. A functioning laptop I can work on again.

Persistance is the key with Dell (let alone anyone) these days

Yeah it sure seems that way.

They called me today for a follow up and asked after updating the video drivers if the laptop is still getting hot.

WTF! Are you serious? Of course it's hot. It shuts off all the time while playing games and doing my 3d work.

I can hear the fans kick in on mine when it starts getting hot while gaming. Also some third party management software, even some Nvidia stuff I found would casue the fans to not work properly. Sometimes a clean install of Windows is the best medicine. Keep everything stock with Dell aproved drivers and see how it goes. I know it can be a lot of work, but if it solves the problem you are further ahead. Also if you have a spare HDD to use to install on then you can keep your old one in case it doesnt fix it. Good luck

Yeah I was thinking about picking up a much larger harddrive but i am holding off.

I have a large external that I regularly back up all my work and settings to as it would be devastating to lose all my work.

So talked with like 12 people at Dell today. Because my battery is dead I can't update my bios and they will not send a tech out to fix any issue with over heating. isn't the v07 or whatever the most updated bios? If so then I already have that version.

These guys seem to just be ignoring whatever I say to them about the condition of my system.

So I need to know. Does the m1710 and m1730 or whatever the most up to date model is share the same battery? I would hate to get a new battery for this pos if it just gets junked out anyways.

No 1730 battery is different. Post a wanted add in the For Sale section. Ask for a useable battery and see what come up. Actually Woodstock may have what you need if you send him a PM. Hes a great guy and a great seller here too.

Oh and I dont thing the Bios should have anything to do with the overheating issue. Mine dont use the latest Bios and I dont have any heat issues.

well if we lived in the same town that may help me my good friend. But honestly I don't think they bios would make any difference as this has happened before and it wasn't the bios.

Hell when the tech came out to replace my mobo i even had some arctic silver waiting for him to use. Still 7 months later and here i am again.

Either way I'm still pestering Dell about this.

be careful talking about intentionally damaging your laptop for the free replacement.

i thought you could deposit the battery's price into my paypal account and i will ship it to you, update your bios and ship it back and i will refund when i get the battery back

oh i'm not gonna damage this thing on purpose. i don't need a new one that bad. I'm just gonna stop into a local best buy see if they have a spare batt i can use for 10 minutes.

If not I'll hit you up woodstock
