Yeah besides this over heating issue i love this laptop. It is great for 3d work and my other work.

Just wish I could get this over heating issue resolved so I could go on as normal.

So I finally got around to ordering a new battery. Should be here this week. We will see how this all works out. Lately this POS has really been acting up. Locking up, over heating again and again.

Once I get the battery I'm doing a backup, format and clean install. See if it makes any difference at all.

My mate had the same problem. Turned out he was watching movies on it in bed and blocking the bloody fans.
Had to take it all apart and clean it out, a lot of dust at the heatsinks especially at the cpu side.
Pretty easy to take apart..definitely suggest this as they ingest a lot of dust.

Got the new battery and updated the bios. Batt only cost me like 70 bucks so no biggy there.

Now this weekend I'm going to be backing everything up. Taking this apart and cleaning it really good and testing her out. If no luck and it still overheats I'm going to do a fresh clean install of Vista and go from there.

If I am still having issues after that I'll be calling Dell again and it won't be pretty.

wont be pretty for you, silly goose.

Dude, I feel your pain, was on the phone to Dell earlier today about my overheating 7900 GS in my M1710.

After an hour being treated like a retard the tech told me I needed a new Video card (really? go figure) and that he would order one and have an engineer come out to me. He then told me that they didn't have any stock of my card and that nVidia had begun to remanufacture them and I would have to wait until they got a delivery.

I then spoke to his manager who said the same thing. He said that because they had a number of failing cards they had to ask nVidia to restart manufacturing them (must have giving away too many M1730 :P) and that I would have to wait. I tried to ask if it was a common problem (obviously is) to see what his reaction would be and whether it was likely the replacement would end up faulty as well. He just repeated himself and said I would get a call when one was in.

Gonna give it a couple of days and ring them again and push some more.

:-(

OK so I have flashed the bios. Updated vid drivers. Cleaned this out nicely and still after about 30 minutes of gaming. ZAP!!

So what am I left with? Looks like i'm calling Dell again this week.

So I called. They had me run those stupid diagnostic tests. All that showed me was I have a few dead pixels on my lcd.

Playing any games is what cooks my system like a foreman grill.

Damn asshats!

Stop the insanity. What do I have to do? Seriously?

So they called me back. They are sending out another tech with another video card.

So let's see how long this lasts.

Maybe I'll see if I can get this beast to overheat with the tech here. Maybe that will help. Who knows.

Well after being told I had to wait for a new card to be manufactured, the engineer arrived today with a refurbished card. But, not only was I lied to about receiving a newly manufactured card, they also sent me a refurbed Rev A00 card, which are known to have issues when I originally had a Rev A01 card. On top of that they replaced my motherboard, again with a refurbed one, but with a BIOS that is several versions out of date... WTF!?!?

Well you do not have much of a leg to stand on on the "refurb" parts as the fine print indicates that refurb parts maybe used.

I also believe that even new parts can be marked as refurb.

BTW of the 79xx series cards the rev 0 cards were the ones that were easier to Over clock. I do not recall any Bugs in the Rev 0 cards that made the Rev 1 better. It was felt the rev 1 cards were changed only to limit the OC on the GPUs considering the failure rate experianced in the early day when OC these cards was common place.

So I have the new video card in now. Haven't had a chance to push my system again but we shall see. I should be able to give it a nice run this weekend.
