Should have an order number in about 7 days with the details about replacement. So we will see what happens.

Thanks for all the advice guys. We will see what happens.

Who knows. Maybe I'll just get lucky and get what I want. Probably not though.

Talked to Dell again today. Still no updates on anything. They said it might take another 7 days before I hear anything about what the replacement will be.

It doesn't take that long. It takes about 48 hours. I would highly recommend you demand to speak to a supervisor and demand an order number. They have the power to do that, they just need "persuation"

Yeah I gotta submit some work here in a minute and I'll probably call em.

I called. Was told it was approved and system is being built but they have no idea what the replacement will be.

Anything I should look out for? What has problems? Is the 1730 good? I have no experience with it so I am worried. I am a 3d artist and work from home. I use my laptop for 3d modeling, unreal development and gaming.

I have a desktop as well but I use my laptop all the time.

What is the top of the line video card in the 1730?
You should be getting an order number shortly...it will have the details

Hopefully it's a M17x

the best cards in the M1730 are the 8800 or 9800 Cards but they are back ordered for months.

Yeah the back ordered thing scares me a little. I have the 7950gtx and I know there have been problems with 8 series cards so I need something stable.

Guess I'll just have to wait until I get that order number.

One member just updated his M1710 review after an on-going strong performing 3 1/2 years.

cheers ...

That's another thing that worries me: they replace the card and two/four months later I end up with the same problem.

Bad parts ...

cheers ...

i would gladly trade back my 1710 for my 1730 if i could! the 1710 i thought was a pain in the butt, but the 1730 is on a different level in terms of pile of shit ness

1710- lasted 2.5 years with 3 gpu replacements
1730- 10 months old, 8 gpu's and several other problems. way uglier, way bigger, worse battery life.
yeah, the 1730 is a giant pile of crap

Sorry, I left out a that.

that they replace the card and two/four months later I end up with the same problem.

It hasn't happened yet. But it probably will.

Hmm, you're still correct. It'll be due to bad parts.

This is where the bean counters override the system designer in deciding what's a good system is all about. In this cast they just packed thing in without paying attention to the whole base construction.

Dell is not alone in this department though. Now and then manufacturers would throw at us consumers some wacko systems.

cheers ...

Great. I hope to god they dont try and give me a damn 1730 then. That will not be ok with me by any means if you would rather have your 1710 back.

I hate arguing about this crap but damn this laptop wasn't cheap and I bought the highest warranty they offered so I think customer satisfaction is in order.

Anyways. i'll keep you all posted.

So i followed up again today. Still no change. They said another 4-5 days. I told them by end of day today or I contact BBB. They originally told me 7 bus days and I would have an Order Number. So there has been no progress since day 1.

I am expecting to go on a trip soon and need to bring my laptop for business as I can't carry my huge dev station with me.

So they called me back today. Tried to offer me the xps 16. I told them no because it was a 16" and I need the screen real estate and it has the ati card and from my experience my software runs much nicer with nvidia.

They offered the Alienware M17x but they mentioned refurbished. Not so sure about that but hey it beats the one I have now. So I should find out more in the next day or two.
Take the M17x,

I doubt they even have a refurb it woulod most likley be built new

So they called me back a second time and said they don't have any refurbed and the wait is really long. So they offered me the xps studio 16 again. Brand new fully loaded (so they said) I declined as I do not want the 16" screen and don't think it is comparable to what I had in my system.

I told them that the M17x that they offered earlier would be just as good and that is what I would like. So they are going to call me again tomorrow.

I'm guessing they are just dicking around trying to get out of this cheaply.
