Ipod's battery is supposed to only last 3 years. But then you send it in to get another battery. I'm not sure about Dell's battery life. Does anyone know who the odm is for the Dell DJ?

There is a great video about the batterylife of the iPod...a very funny one...

Be advised that the length depicted in the video is not normal behavior though...

Dell DJ - Cheaper. Relatively easy to use. Slightly bigger. Not as good looking.
IPOD - More expensive. Itunes very intuitive. Smaller. Better looking.

That said, the price differences isn't warranted to me. The ease of use of the Ipod over the DJ also is a moot point as once it's learned, it's a non-issue. The size is probably th only spot where the Ipod is desirable to me, jut not enough to justify the price difference.

It's essentially a rebadged Creative Zen...

There's quite a bit of info available from cnet. But here's my 2cents. First if you do buy one, factor in the purchase of dudebox from redchairsoftware - it's well worth buying. You can read all about it from redchair but essentially it lets you treat the DJ as a hard drive and adds a few other "nice to have" features. You can install the dudebox on as many machines as you want but the license is tagged against a single DJ.

That being said:
Pros - sound quality, battery life, quality
Cons - proprietary battery and powersupply, no ACC format, no FLAC format, heavy.

Would I buy again? Probably not - I really want something that's lighter. The DJ weight is almost 1/2 lb so you know that you're carrying it around. I prefer solid state devices myself...256M is enough to hold a 100 tunes which is fine for my needs. The HDD based units are great if you want to hook up to a stereo at both home and work. It's much more reliable and convienent than using a computer.

Now the IPod-mini?? That looks really interesting...there's a good review of the rio karma at hexus.net also they make a smaller player the nexus which still holds 750 and weighs less than 2oz.

If you need tons of storage and don't mind the weight, the DJ is a fine player. But I don't need THAT much storage and I do mind the weight...I wouldn't buy an ipod either..

I have the Dell DJ 20 Gig and really like it a lot, battery life is 18 to 20 hours.
It can hold up to 5000 songs,(5000 with the 20 Gig 3000 with the 15 Gig) menu screen is large and easy to navigate,(Blue Backlight)and it gives me the option of using it as a portable hard drive so I can download just about anything and transfer it to my computer later, sound quality is very very good, transfering music to the DJ is a breeze,Dell just updated the Firmware so it can do anything the IPOD can do, it also can be used as a voice recorder since it has a built in microphone ..I plug it into my speakers at work and listen to my music as I work.....(Life is Good)

Specs Dell DJ 20 Gig
8600 1.7
128 Nvidia 5650FxGo
768Mb 333DDR
60Gig Hd
15.4 WSXGA+

iRiver iHP-120 best bar none. Well either that or the 40GB version. Soooo many features. Optical and analog line in and out, integrated (and external included) mic, FM tuner, and you can even directly encode any source a line out directly to an MP3. Oh and it even supports the Ogg Vorbis codec. You WILL NOT regret this player, i love mine.

karate, i second that. i have the ihp-120 myself and love it. I gave my 3rd gen ipod to my girlfriend. the battery life on the ipod was crap. would last on average 5 hours. In addition, as i have posted before, the ipod maintains some kind of "always on" state, meaning the ipod is still drawing current even when turned off. That's why the ipod doesn't go through a "boot up" process. The problem with this, i've found is that if i left the ipod turned off over a weekend, come monday morning, my ipod's battery was drained. Absolute crap. the ipods design is great, but functionally the ihp-120 kicks the ipod's arse.

the ihp-120 also has a built in fm tuner which works great, also has a built in mic for recording. in addition, windows xp will recognize the ihp-120 as an external hard drive without any drivers. Unlike trying to connect the ipod to a windows machine, which i had to use third party software to do, like ephpod

in any case, look into the ihp-120 and google for reviews on it. it's gotten rave reviews

Buy the iPod. I have the iGP-100 from iRiver, which i received for christmas, and it is a piece of crap. Awkward to hold, not very user friendly, and it only holds 1.5 GB.

what is this new codec..

Ogg Vorbis you mean? It's just another compressed audio format. I think it offers higher quality than MP3 at the same compression rate. Don't have too much of these files to be sure of that. However, Vorbis is popular because of OGM...a container that combines XVid video, Ogg Vorbis audio, and multiple subtitle tracks (like a DVD). I think this is the best format out there for online digital video transfers (non-licensed video of course...hehe), especially among the anime community. (because some of us can't speak Japanese and need the subtitles!) That's how I came across Ogg Vorbis in the first place. I will take a open source, royalty free, and perhaps better quality codec over MP3 anyday.

And I just got a iHP-120. For some reason, best buy has it for $329...that's even lower than the price on NewEgg...I think it's great...the Ogg support means its a player built for the technology community rather than a fashion accessory like the iPod.

it's Creative. and Creative also produces the Zen Xtra, in my opinion the best value in mp3 players today. the Zen Xtra 30gb can be had for around $250, and it has the best sound quality on the market, easily. Contrary to popular belief, it DOES NOT share the same innards with the DJ. I love my Xtra, and haven't had a single problem with it in a year of use, though it is a little stocky compared to the iPod.
