SATA Drive Connector

Hello-

In my XP system, I'm trying to upgrade my 5400rpm SATA drive to a 7200rpm SATA drive. Unfortunately, I've run into a slight problem. The 7200rpm drive is not being recognized and after looking over both drives, I noticed they are slightly different.

The 5400rpm looks like the drive on the right. The new 7200rpm looks like the one on the left. Is that extra 4 pin connector responsible for the problem (the laptop does not seem to have a connector for it).

Thanks.

I am pretty sure the 2.5 and the 3.5 SATA drives use the same connectors. That being said the larger of the two wafer-based connectors is the power and the smaller being the SATA data hookup. Both drives apear to and should have both connectors. So that means the standard metal pin connector has to be for jumpers or LED's or something auxilary like that...I think.

What are the model numbers of both drives?

I don't know why a SATA drive would have those pins...very interesting.

What are the size of the drives in question?

cheers ...

That connector isn't use as part of the SATA spec. It's a connector that's attached to the hard drive by the manufacturer for a multitude of different purposes. Needless to say your laptop's not using that one, just the other two standard SATA connections.

I would first check to see if the drive works in another system at all. If it doesn't work in another computer then you might just have a DOA drive.

The part that is circled in the above pictures isn't the SATA connector.

It's hard to see from the pictures exactly what your problem is. There is only one standard sata connector regardless of device size.
