Help connecting laptop to tv

I have a Toshiba Satellite P305D-S8829.
I'm trying to connect my laptop to a TV with S Video Cable.
All I see i a black screen with few flickerings here & there.I have gone to Windows Mobility Center and I have clicked on connect display and I had chosen the option for external..I pressed FN + F5 and I recieve nothing..Can someone please help I've searched all over and no solution yet...Can you please tell me in a step by step process I'm slow at this...Thnx in Advance!

Try restarting the computer with the s-video cable connected to the TV. Sometimes the system needs to recognize the external screen on bootup in order to make it work right.

i have and it still doesn't work..I don't know if it's true but a friend told me i need a vga cable because my video card can't use S Video.I have a ATI Radeon 3100 Is this true?

VGA cable would not work with the TV without a converter.

Your video card support S-Video output just fine. Cable can slo be defect or with bad quality.

Will not work with composite video without a converter. Going to Component video from analog VGA is a matter of wiring up the correct cable however IIRC. For example see here...

They are a higher end cable manufacturer that got attention by being sued by Monster and telling Monster to go screw themselves, so you can get the same thing cheaper if you want elsewhere, but the basic cable is just a pin out wiring. Of course your TV has to support component video in order to do this however.

As qhn stated, it is possible that it is a defect. Though the only thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is to double check your BIOS to ensure there is no setting there that is turned off, but usually it won't be as it is a video thing.
