Fan problem Dell Inspiron 6000

Dell Inspiron 6000 with Dell diagnostic error code 3700:011B
Fan runs at low speed, but there is no high speed. So the notebook works for many things, but I have to watch the temperature.

Dell tech suggested updating the BIOS, which I did.
Then I replaced the fan, using excellent instructions on Dell's web site. No small accomplishment for this notebook. But I still have the same problem. There was no dust inside.

I run Ubuntu Linux, but the diagnostics are on a self-booting CD-rom from Dell. The computer is a little over three years old. Dell repair is too expensive.

The next thing I tried was installing BIOS control utilities called gkrellm and i8kutils (i8kfangui in the windows version). This reported the cpu temp and other things correctly. I manually tried turning the fan on and off with this GUI tool. The real fan speed did not change and the rpm value reported did not change.

Any suggestions?

Same problem here with the Dell 9300 Inspiron. Dell suggested sending it in for repair..... about 300$. I think it has something to do with the BIOS.

Pippster,
When did your problem start? I had my notebook over 2 years before I noticed a problem. I recently installed the newer BIOS, which was released shortly after I bought the computer. Why would a BIOS problem show up after years of normal use? This is a low-price computer. Fixing it myself is a hobby -- I could not justify paying Dell.
