! Just got my XPS, what is this line across my screen?!?!

Ok, I came home from work early, and ripped into my box containing my XPS..

Plugged it in, and pressed the power button.

At the bottom of the screen, about an inch up, is a horizontal line going all the way from one side of the screen to the other..

Im about to go into panic mode.. I dont want to have to send this thing back for repair when i just got it..

Any ideas?

Tom

maybe the lcd inverter cable that plugs it into the motherboard came loose during shipping. You might want to check that.

It means u got a Dell.

Tom, I had a similar line and also something like this. Call customer support and arrange for a replacement or return. Thats what I did.

Well, I havent called yet, im gonna see what upgraded drivers and such might do..

I hate to have to send it back, I wonder if they can send me whatever replacement part and ill install it myself.. (im not shy about cracking open a computer..)

Its usable now, just a minor annoyance..

I get that too time to time after taking my laptop to class. Mine disappears after reboot. Most likely it's from a loose connection from the LCD to the video card. I don't think it is actually a hardware problem. BUT, if you really want to get your lcd replaced say:
" I have a ROW of dead pixels an inch from the bottom of the screen. I have tried the diagnostic cd to test the video card, and everything passed. I also tried to hook up an external monitor and there is no line, which isolates the problem to the LCD. So, I am calling to request an LCD replacement"

This should cover all the bases and they wont annoy you with meaningless questions.

Oh and an LCD replacement can be done by you I believe. They send an ENTIRE LCD with it's outer casing with instructions on how to replace. If you're going to call, ask if you have this option and if they can ship a SAMSUNG (for SXGA) or a SHARP (for uxga) because these were "proven" on the dell forums to be far superior to the other manufactures of LCDs.

After all this checking for the lcd's, I decided to check to see which mine is. Mine's WUXGA and it's samsung. I'm a happy camper here, the XPS rocks.

Well, I did the bios, the drivers, and hooked up an external monitor to it..
no line on the external monitor..

Guess its time for a phone call

Have you tried the flex cable though? If its a loose connection then the problem may well show on the LCD and not the monitor, so It'll save you a lot of hassle...

Not yet, I suppose I need to take this thing apart to do that..
Yeah, its pretty easy though, just follow the instructions for removing the video, except you stop where it gets to the LCD cable, and just check thats its in firmly (remove and then reseat it).

While not being disrespectful towards others opinions here....wondering If its just the loose cable connection then how would a reboot fix it?
excuse the ignorance, but if you were to take the lcd out to reseat a cable or something, would it be possible to get dust "inside" the lcd?

^ na it doesnt matter.

Well, Ive been e-mailing the dell tech support people. Didn't want to call them, as I have a hard time understanding them (I had somehow gotten transfered to them when i was trying to find out why the machine was being delayed) and that would probally just frustrate me more. They want me to send it back.

When i get home tonight, ill try to see if resetting the LCD cable..

How long does it usually take when you have to send the machine back?

I guess what realy irritates me, is it was like this right outta the box. Its not like I had it for a week then it got screwy.. What the hell is that "testing" phase for anyway?

(I'm in a highly irritated state of mind right now..)

If it's an issue with a loose cable, the fault may be more with the delivery people than with Dell. If it got knocked around a bit, perhaps the cable came a bit loose. If it's just a cable, be glad nothing more got damaged I guess. Maybe ask your UPS driver if he played soccer with it before dropping it off.

Well..
As irritated as I was about this, I have to give their customer service some credit..

Here is what they told me today..

"Tom, please provide me the verification information so that I could create a system exchange, you will be receiving a new system , after you receive the new system then ship the old system back to Dell."

Im impressed.

Well good luck with the exchange!
