m5550 BIOS history

Hi guys, I haven't posted in a while but had a question.

I haven't done much with my m5550 in a while but just recently got a new core 2 duo 2.16 Ghz. When I purchased mine, which was quite a while ago, it came with the core duo. I wanted to upgrade to a 64-bit OS so i purchased a Core 2 Duo. I also purchased 4 Gigs of ram.

I had done some BIOS upgrading in the past to see if that would fix heat issues.

The question is, because I don't remember how far I went with the BIOS updates, I'm not sure if I have the latest. Although my BIOS shows 2.07, is it in fact the 2.07W?

Does anyone have the 2.07W installed and still have the BIOS show as 2.07 only?

Was there ever a BIOS update of just 2.07 without a letter at the end?

Thanks in advance!

Just an update.

I updated the BIOS to 2.07W and the BIOS still only shows 3325 MB for RAM.

Is this a problem with my motherboard and if so I don't think I have any warranty left so I'm stuck with this right?

I believe it's a limitation of the motherboard chip set.

This is the response I got from them.

Thank you for contacting Alienware.

The reason why your system shows 3 GB of RAM is because a limitation of some Intel Chipsets. For more information, I have posted a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605

The chipset your system has is an Intel 945PM. Let me know if you need more information.
So basically, Alienware has put out a bogus BIOS update that doesn't do what it says it does? What kind of crap company is this?

I sorry sir for the inept due diligence in this situation, had you properly researched this issue you would have been fully aware that this was an imminent pitfall prior to your purchase.

Area-51m 5500/766 / 5550

None of these machines had a duo 2core,they had 2 single cores hyper-threading.

Not true.

Both of my m5550's have Core2 Duo T7200 CPUs - and they're still running great.

I believe it was the m5500 that had the Core Duo (solo) processor.

As stated in my post above, the 3.2GB memory limit on the m5500 and m5550 was a limitation of the motherboard chipset, not the CPU.

Hello there , Please help if you can!!!

I have an M5550i R3 alienware area 51 laptop. The factory videocard was 7600 go i upgraded it to 8600 M GT worked perfectly ..just some overheating issues resolved with a big fan...

Recently i wanted to upgrade my sys from 2 GB to 4 GB and i couldn't even imagine i would be stepping on so many toes...therefore i learnt that the Pheonix BIOS 2.03 needed and upgrade,..

I tried with 4 GB on 2.03 BIOS and the system did nothing... it powered on then a beeep then nothing... so i knew i had to upgrade it.......... then i wen to my hive and discovered the 2.07W BIOS.

The bios upgrade went very smoothly with the help of that pdf step by step guide... but when the system restarted i had a major problem( i still have it...).

The system does not recognize my 8600M gt nor the related drivers... and is running only in 16 bits of color...(black white and grey plus some hints of blue instead of 32 bit true color mode...) and only on 800x600 resolution........

I tried to uninstall the video drivers reinstall them then format the C drive reinstalling the OS (Win7) still the problem wouldnt go away......PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN . Thank you so mutch....!!!

Reflash it back to 2.03 is what I would do - forget about the 4GB, or find another working 7600 somewhere

cheers ...
