Mac Mini

Okay... so i am really wanting to set up a small HTPC or something of the like to let me play videos on my LCD tv. i happen to have a very large amount of video on external HDD and dvd, and it would seem like a mac mini would do the job nicely.

i thought of apple tv but its crippled playback and file type support makes it a no go, and i dont want to do the hacking or 3rd party installations like boxee in order to uncripple it. i also dont really want to go with something other than a mac.

yes i know i could just hook a laptop up and do that but i want to be doing both, using the laptop and have the portability while still having the connectivity.

the whole thing that sparked it is that apple canada finally has some in the refurb store (not spectacular deals but hey....) its not had any for months it seems.

anyone got other suggestions? solutions?

Yea a Mac mini is a popular choice. To be honest though I will say I am looking at Netgear's new EVA HD 9150 for myself for this purpose, but my files are all stored on a network server. I know it has a HD slot on it, but I don't remember off hand if it can support a USB disk, and doubt it could support a USB DVD drive, so I don't think it will fit in your case.

A Mac Mini would be a good choice, I would tend to reccomend not using Front Row so much(I find it very limiting) and instead go with a third party FE, aka Plex,XBMC, Boxee, etc.
