Got my laptop! ECS G556e *first impressions* - Page 10

Guitarded/Warren - Can you tell me if their is a lable on the lid? I know this is lame, but I'd rather their not be a cheesy logo from some small vendor.

I don't really mind having it there, but I can't really read it, what does it say?

Does it look like it can come off easily?

<-- Anal.
yes you can remove it easily by peeling slowly (same as Pentium and ATI stickers)

my replacement came in today, it actually didnt have the hugebee sticker thing on the lid.

it looks pretty nice without it. so yea, its funny u mentioned it earlier.

good thing is, there are NO DEAD PIXELS this time around.

bad thing is, it came with 512mb of ram instead of 1gig, and im in the process of getting them to ship me the extra 512mb stick.

everything else is as it should be.

they took the hard drive out of my old laptop and put it into a brand new laptop...i dont see why it took them a week to do that, its a 10 minute process. then i had to wait another week after they shipped it ground, i was hoping to get some sort of 3 day air service.

the keyboard feels very springy on the right side now...which is a bit annoying, it wasnt like this on my previous laptop. still dont have any stuck keys though.

I hope it works great for you!!!
Now, if you can just tell me what the heck to buy, I need to order by this weekend, Monday at the latest.
6+ weeks, and I am back to square one.

Well, I think the race between bang for the buck is a dead heat between the Compal vs the ECS books. Personally, I like the look of the ECS much better.

I noticed on all of the pictures I have seen on this laptop that there is a little hole-looking thing to the left of the touchpad, but I have not seen a close enough picture to see it very well... what is that?
Yeeeah, the g556e looks pretty nice... the problem with missed keystrokes seems a little sketchy and i'd be a little concerned until i heard of a fix for it (i'd def. go for the 7200 rpm hdd). I've read through most of this massive post and am not sure if the added size of the cl56 adds at all to cooling ability. Sound seems to be commented on more with the g556e. Screen seems to be better on g556e.

Definately a tossup... my cl56 should be here anyday and i'll post some comments when it does.

I was thinking about peeling off the ati and winxp sticker but im afraid it would be sticky afterwards and that is so hard to get rid of. Anyone have this problem when they took off their sticker.

I guess i should be lucky my laptop is perfect, so far only 1 dead pixel which i cant see unless i do test. I do rarely have the miss "a" stroke, but thats not really an issue for me, im not a typist.

I just like the sleek and thin look of this notebook, every other notebook there seems to be very fat. Only complaint is of course the laptop sound, but i got zalman usb soundcard along with their rs6 headphones. Also i do seem to get alot of heat if i dont have my laptop on my cooling pad. Also bought the heat-pipe cooler and vantec notebook cooler, for sucks by the way!! My trusty 4 fan laptop cooler beats them both hands down, i feel no warmth at all while i get heat from both heat-pipe and vantec cooler, I rather get a usb hub, waste of money for 2 useless notebook cooler.
which cooler did u like better?

i was considering the hexus heatpipe cooler or whatever, but noticed that its kinda bulky and was actually a little too small for the dimensions of my laptop

im using a 4 fan cooler from evercool... is that the same one ur using?

the vantec was revieed by tomshardware and i didnt like the fact that it blew air infront of you and it required its own AC plug... kinda limits its portability as a notebook cooler
post #194 of 221
i also went the route of destickering my laptop
i didnt like the cheap look it made on my laptop... it looked like i got it from some retail store or something...

the "designed for windows xp" sticker is a pain in the arse to remove.. it is actually an aluminumum plated sticker and u will need a very thin edge type thing to pry it off w/o scratching the notebook it self...

the nexus heat-pipe is crap and the vantec is crap also, too small for any 15 inch, perfect for 12 inch laptops though. I rather get a usb 2.0 hub instead.

I like ac adapters though, since its stationery i want it to have its own power supply. My notebook cooler is a big square rectangle gray plastic thin box with 4 fans in each corner with vents across the surface and sides. dont know the company though but works like a charm fits perfectly and cools like nothing else. It does have fan speed dial and led light along with on/off switch on front right.

i peeled mine off as soon as i got it. its a little dificult to do it with just your finger nails because the stickers are actually metal, not paper. get a toothpick or someting to get underneath them and pull them off.

there is no sticky residue or blemishes left over.

that sounds like my laptop cooler!

it has a wheel to adjust the speed of the fan and has a red led switch near the front to toggle on/off

it is powered by usb in the rear and vents air out from the left/right sides

We all seem to have laptop coolers for those portable graphic powerhouses. Mine is the Vantec Lapcool. It only has two fans but keeps my ECS 556 relatively cool. Now the ECS fan rarely turn on even when I run it at the full speed of 1.4Ghz. Even when it does turn on, it only does it for a few seconds and turn off again.

The small hole to the left of the touchpad is the microphone. I haven't tested whether it works, but it's quite neat. My last laptop didn't have one of those.
