Yep that is the same notebook cooler as mine rincewind.

Only thing i did was put a ac adapter instead of the usb cable, so i can free up my usb slot.

i did my research b4 i got one... tomshardware said this was the best and the only downside to it was that the LED was too red/bright haha

Congratulations on acquiring the Echo Indigo IO, guitarded . How do you like the card? I personally have a pair of Sennheiser 600 which I am currently running through my desktop's M-Audio Revo/Marantz 2215.

well i'm now officially an owner of the G556e!

have only played around with it for about 2 hours, i'm happy with it so far and i don't have any problems with it (no dead pixels, no missed type strokes, no loud fan...). i'll post pictures and a more in-depth review sometime this week, but for now i have two questions:

1. the only negative thing that i can find so far is that i hear a clicking noise sometimes. it's not really loud, but since the notebook is dead silent otherwise it's kinda annoying. my first guess is that it could be the hard drive. it seems to be coming from the front left...left of the touchpad. what could that be?

2. how can i reconfigure the internet explorer and outlook express hotkeys? they're a great idea but i would want them to open opera and thunderbird or office

I just placed an order for the ECS 556e on Internetishop's website. I have a couple of questions:

Did anyone receive an e-mail right after they placed an order that confirmed the order?

Also, in the page that it takes you to after you log in, does it show an invoice under the "Tracking Order Information" link?

I just want to make sure that I properly followed all the steps and everything, and if it took some time for the above mentioned questions to show up, I'll feel more secure about having the order actually placed.

Alexklaas - that clicking sound is probably the hard drive. I wouldn't worry too much about the clicking noise. This is Windows accessing the hd and moving things around to optimize the file structure of the hd. The clicking sound should go away within a few weeks if you constantly use your laptop. The more you boot and shut-down windows, the faster the sound should go away. I'm sure that's the case here. What harddrive do you have in your notebook?

I just got mine: 1.7GHz, 1GB, 60 GB/7200 RPM, 9700/128.
InternetIShop did send an email with the UPS tracking number, but no order confirmation - shipped next business day after order.
There are some occasional dropped keystrokes, but not as bad as PLC's. I'll harass them to get and support the bios fix.
The speaker sound is awful, and they aren't loud enough even with all the software volumes at max. I'm using an M-Audio Omnistudio USB, which sounds great. Windows 2000 Advanced Server works, today I'll install a Fedora dual boot.

Cheers!

i investigated the problem a little further, it's definately the hard drive. i surely hope that you're right and it will go away but i somewhat doubt that. it seems to occur only in a certain idle mode of the drive. when i heavily access the drive there's no clicking and also when i let it sit there for 5 minutes it's gone. but most of the time it's there.

i have an hitachi travelstar 5K80 (80gigs, 5400rpm)

Bluegeek, you said it has a few dropped keystrokes so how often does it occur? I just want to make sure if I were to order that I wouldn't be missing keys every few words, 'cause that'd be pretty annoying...

Btw, I'm just wondering does it make an annoying clicking sound when typing 'cause I wouldn't want it to bother my classmates when taking notes during class...

I'm not a writer, but after a cold boot I typed 300 words at 55 wpm and noticed two dropped letter 'a's. In an hour of C# programming I only noticed one or two dropouts (there were more typos . I'd like to get it fixed, but won't return the system over it.

The keyboard is slightly "clickier" than the Thinkpad 770 I'm replacing, but I wouldn't call it annoying. At this point I should take a cheap shot and say that you'll never notice over the fan anyway, but I'm actually OK with the fan noise at this point. I guess I could take it to the library and see if I get any dirty looks. If anyone's got a suggestion for a reference sound I'll try recording it.

Cheers,

BG

You should try to switch to the Notebook power profile (instead of the Always On option). My experience has been that when you are using this profile, the laptop is normally silent considering how quiet the harddrive is. So long as you don't start playing Far Cry in the library and turn this laptop into a whining monster, you should be fine.

I bought one of ECS's Desknotes (A929 Athlon XP Version) two years ago and it was an OK machine. It is now time to upgrade however and the G556e is looking really nice. Are there other places to get the G556e other than www.internetishop.com? I am also wanting it with the new Dothan chip. Does anyone know of a place online that has them?
