Okay, finally able to pull myself away from playing with my new 556 laptop. I can say for a fact that guitarded reviews and impressions are dead on. I will add what i can to his impressions.
ATI mobility 9700 128mb
Display is excellent, it looks like i have 1 dead pixel so far, its permanently lit black. Only can see it when im doing dead pixels test. Otherwise the display is very very bright when plugged in, when unplugged is only slightly dim, still bright though.
Chasis is very sturdy and strong, like the metal lid very stylish, my only real annoyance is the grill where the speakers are, it looks and feels very flimsy and will bend and mold when extreme pressure is applied, though i never touch it now that i know its not that strong, it looks like it might be an exhaust vent but i never feel any air from it, so i think its only for speakers.
Keyboard is fine to me, haven't had any missed keystrokes, though i dont use many word processing program, mainly surfing web and playing games, hardly ever type if i can help it. Touchpad is very responsive, still do not know what the circle dir button does below touchpad. I bought a wireless notebook mouse from logitech anyways so dont bother with touchpad much.
Wireless minipci card is excellent, tested with my wireless network at work, get excellent signal and fast speeds.
No loss signals or connection drops on my end so far. Though truth be told, I like hardwire better and use hardwire at home always.
Speakers and sound sucks! Its what u expect from notebook speakers, plus there is no external volume button, have to increase volume thru system panel.
dvd/cd-rw combo is okay, but loud as hell, louder than fan at full speed.
Fan noise is almost non-existant if no gaming or graphic intensive program is involved. When i play games fan does kick in to full speed, so far i only have heard 2 fan settings, silent and full speed when games are played. Not noisy at all, u do hear it when it kicks into overdrive but it doesn't bother me at all, even in a quiet room you will hear a faint hum, it will not bother people say in a classroom. Heat is not much of a problem anywhere besides the bottom, it is only warm when video card kicks in. There is almost no heat at all if your not using video card.
battery life has not been tested so far, but i can probably say you wont get much more than 2 hours if your planing to game on battery, plus you have to adjust powerplay to let video card run on full if on battery. 3 hours seem to be the threshold for general word processing and surfing web, gives me a time readout when i unplug and dont have any graphic intense programs running. Not really concern about battery life, 2-3 hrs is fine with me, its semi-portable. So far 99% of the time its plug in, at work and at home.
General dislikes - only 2 usb slots, rj45 jack is on left side instead of back as with power jack which is sticking on right side.
Benchmarks!! (stock speed have not install powerstrip yet)
3dmark03 - 2781
Aquamark3 - 22548 (cpu-8165, gpu-2616)
antialiasing off, anisotropy 4x
Also does anyone know where i can get new drivers for ati mobility cards? Does anyone know why my driver says ati 9600 instead of 9700, though hardware reads 9700 chip. It seems like theres no drivers that will read for ati 9700.
Will load some pics as soon as i know how to downsize my 1mb pics, or just retake them when i got some time.
