9700 Now Available - Page 6

Today I spoke with Ronald Acuna who is a supervisor in AW's customer service department. He informed me, after double checking with technical support, that the ATI 9700 will only be available in new systems and not offered as an upgrade due to incompatability with previous versions of the a51m2 motherboards.
So, my 'upgradable video' lappy can not get any better than the Nvidia 5700... THIS SUCKS!!
I look forward to selling this machine when PCIe comes out and I can assure you that I will NEVER buy another Alienware system again. This is how I feel right now... takin it up the A$$.

I read what he said but one paragraph stands out to me...

"I do want to comment that Alienware is maintaining an open line of communication with the GPU manufacturers, Intel, and its manufacturing partners to try and introduce further upgrades on the current platform. This however has not yet been determined and we cannot guarantee further upgrades at this moment."

Has anyone asked if it is possible to have the motherboard switched out so that the 9700 will work. I find it very disheartening to know that with all the money we have spent on these for the purpose of upgrading that they can do nothing to accommodate us.

I asked this question and was told that this was not an option currently...

which motherbourd is needed to work with the 9700
post #109 of 115
...the latest rev which the Tech would not tell me what that is...all I know is that I have rev 2.0 and right now that is a no go with the 9700...

as do I which it was up graded to when I sent mine in back in Jan. I have a feeling that anything can be done for a price. I just payed this lappy off perhaps I should ebay it and get the newer one
post #111 of 115
...you read my mind...eBay it is unless I can at least get a 9700 and be happy for another year to two...

PS: The ultimate keeper would be a pci-e motherboard upgrade but read my sig as to hopes of that!

Im sending my laptop back on Monday, and it will get the motherboard replaced with the newer one (or so I'd think).
