That maybe true but never the less I still ordered it today and if it gets here on Thurs of Fri of this week or next I will be happy.

I odn't htink there will ever be a mobility 9800. And just so you know the mobile 9700 is not based off the desktop 9700 core, but the 9600 core. The mobility 9700 performs more like a desktop 9600XT if anything.

IF ATi is smart they made thier new r420 scalable like NV did so it can easily be scaled down to serive the whole line form high end to low end. You will more likely see a Mobile x600 than a mobile 9800.

Hmm ive got the money I just need to do some more research to see ifits worth it. here is a THG review from a while back I have found useful.

http://www20.tomshardware.com/mobile...203/index.html

I think im gonna wait a month or two Ive waited this long jsut untill the price comes down a tad and all the bugs get ironed out!

Yup Now I get to sit back and wach you guys you brave early adopters fool with this thing ,the install ,the benchmarks and all that come with it. If it is not a significant improvement at leat in the upper 3600 - 3900 range in 3dmark Im gonna wait for the next card! Although it seems thisone does come with a free HL2 voucher!

I expect FULL reviews from who ever gets it first !

I'm with you BG...let all the must-haver's work all the bugs out and then buy it for less money without having to worry about any problems.

I will do a full review with pics and step by step on what is involved in the upgrade. For me it is totally worth it because I have the nVidia Go5600. Alienware did not offer the ATi 9600 when I ordered my Area-51m back in October.

Cool...the 9700 is out...now I shall wait until they do a laptop with more battery life...such as one equipped with an AMD64 processor !

Please do a full battery of benchmarks before and after the upgrade! Thanks and you rule!

Just read in AW forums that when the cards are available for upgrade, they will be sold in the gear shop. Cool, 'cause I really hate talking on the phone!

I will for sure. The guy on the phone told me that they would send it out tomorrow and it will get to me in California by Fri. but from reading what is up on the boards it seems like that will not happen. The guy did say tomorrow but we will see. By the way the 9700 PRO and the Go5700 are the same price $250 .00

its sooooo not worth it... 28 days to wait for it and it doesnt even have 256mb of memory.. I am starting to think we have a limit to how much we can upgrade our video cards.. Maybe some power or heat issue..

Agreed. I'm not sold on it until I see the benchmarks and comparisons to it's predecessor (the 9600). That and I'm pretty damned satisfied with the 9600 I have now (3000+ benchmarks). I'll be content with my 9600 until something really blows it out of the water.

I was really expecting this release to wow me with specs, but I just don't see them (256mb??). The only improvement I do see is a max clock speed (450MHz), which, obviously, anyone can boost up in Powerstrip.

Some good points from here:

Quote:
As far as 3D features are concerned, there are no differences between the MR9700 and its predecessor. The design still uses four pixel-pipelines and two vertex shader units. The top model comes with 128 MB of video memory and a 128Bit memory interface. Unlike the MR9600 family, this line will not feature a PRO version with an even higher core frequency like the MR 9600 PRO.

Of course, sharp and perhaps jealous tongues within the industry claim that the MR9700 is nothing more than an optimized Mobility Radeon 9600 running at a higher clockspeed.

However, ATi also claims to have improved the Z-compression, which is now called Hyper-Z III+ and is supposed to allow for compression ratios of up to 24:1. It is doubtful whether the Z-compression was really improved over that of the MR9600 PRO, which was the previous flagship mobile processor.
And finally:

Quote:
Consequently, if you've only just purchased a notebook using the MR9600Pro or MR9600, there's no need to feel twitchy about upgrading just yet. Even hardcore gamers of the mobile persuasion should consider whether this is a worthwhile upgrade

Ya im with most of you waiting for some benchmarks. However I am curious to know how your getting 3000+ benchmarks! I assume your using 3dmark2003. I currently use the latest build off AW website and i get around 2600?! Are you over clocking...I did a fresh install of the newest omega's...However i do not overclock. Maybe you could enlighten me. I have about 700 MB free of ram when i run the test. and my CPU load is below 10 (usually 2-8% in idle).

Thanks,
Jake-

i am a major tweaker of desktop 3d cards and i noticed that the only advantage you get with a 256MB card is in games with every texture at 1024x1024 or uncompressed textures. there is no reason to need a 256MB card imho

Well called Alienware today and asked the about the status of the ATi 9700 PRO card that I ordered yesterday, the guy told me that it was ready to ship and that I should be getting a tracking No. in my email today. I thin asked thin why does your website say that there is 28 day wait for the card and he told me that they just got the card ready for assembly in new A51-m and as of right now they are not sold out. Once they do sell out it may take them up to 28 days get another batch ready for shipping. He also said that the web designers are working hard updating the whole AW site and adding the new vid cards to the gear shop.

I tried calling today and I have to wait for 2 to 3 weeks. You lucked out big time.

Yes he is OC'ing the gpu. 2600 is pretty standard for the 51m2. I ran mine up to 3200 the other night just to see if it would make it...it did. I usually run the clocks at 420 engine and 220 memory. It's stable and runs reasonably cool, without consuming too much battery. To hit 3200, I think I had it up around 450/250.

Do you have AlienAdrenaline? It is safer to OC if you bought the program, but the omegas allow you to OC just as easily, just not under warranty.

When I get mine I'm definately getting the 9700... I won't have to overclock it.... and OMG! Free Half Life 2 Coupon! Like it'll ever be out... I just wanna say I have the best though.

If it's any help to you guys, I consistently obtain 3dmark scores of around 3300 with my XPS, that has the 9700 and 512mb of ram. The Alienware should be close to those figures. I don't know if the dual channel memory helps out much or if 3300 is even worth a gpu upgrade.
