I don't think it is available yet for existing customers.

9700 a 4 pipe?

Does anyone know if the 9700 Radeon is a 4x pipe or 8x pipe GPU? I think it's a 4x, which would mean it's actually the 9600 so if that's the case then I don't know why the hell they renamed it.

I dont know much about graphics cards but both the 9600 and 9700 on the aw site say 8x for the agp interface.
He is asking about the memory pipeline, not the AGP bus.
The 9700 is 4 Pipes with one texture unit per pipe. The FX 5700 is 4 Pipes and one texture unit per pipe also, but can also be 2 pipes and 2 texture units per pipe, depending on the amount of work to be done.

They renamed it because ATI already produced 3 versions of the mobility9600. They actually did make some minor redesigns for the 9700 and found a way to run the clocks higher, and as such gave it a new name to differentiate it from the 9600, even though they are based on the same core.

Seeing that there are no more delays nor is it a limited item on the AW site when do you guys think we will see the 9700 in the gear shop.

Hmm I might be more apt to bleive this if the poster had more than one post and It was someone like say jamaster or drew telling me this. this however looks like some one just posting to see what reaction they can get out of people so pay it no mind. I would almost seriously doubt he posts again. If he does I would ask for more credible info like the name of the person at alienware who told him that!

WEll brain, since you are looking for a credible source i decided to calla lienwre today.... twice!

i called up and asked if the ati 9700 mobility card will be made available for an upgrade for the 51m's... she said yes, probably in 2-3 months.

i aksed this same questionst o the same agnt 4 or 5 tiems in 4 or 5 different eways to a make sure there is no way she misunderstood me.

i then called back tog et another agent and he also confirmed the card WILL be available for the 51m.

question......perhaps its a dumb question but if AW has been offering the 9700 card in newer machines (for the past month), why are they "witholding" the 9700 from the people who had bought the 51m2 with the 9600 card for an additional 2-3 months?

you guys think they are trying to retool the 9700 to work in the 51m's that were shipped with the 9600 due to motherboard differences as notebookgamer mentioned in the other thread?

i doubt ths is the case...

they have a limited number of cards right now... so they can

use them as an attractive way to lore people to buy 3000.00 systems

or they can sell them as upgrades at 300$ a pop.

this seems liek standard opeating procedure to me

I am not convinced that is the case. The 9700 has not been in limited availibility on the website for close to three weeks now. There has to be some other reason that they have not released it yet.
yeah this is my second post...
and ive been readint this board for about 1-2 weeks now
the reason why i posted that AW wont offer the 9700 upgrade is cause i called em up and thats what they told me...
i dont remember the persons name....but what he said is that the new 9700 is not compatible with the old mobo of the laptop and so instead of the 9700, they are offering the 5700go as an upgrade option...
i told em thats hardly an upgrade cause its a piece of sh*t...
but if there is a compatibility issue then there is really nothing much they can do about it

^^Don't believe the hype until we hear from someone ON the Alienware website. The sales guys/gals don't always get "it" right.

You could not have been talking to Customer Service Kush, you wouldn't be able to talk to customer service unless you're a current Alienware owner. Are you? And generally customer service is in the know a bit more than sales in my experience.
