Computer turns off and fan gets loud

Thread Starter
I have a M5x0N alienware laptop. The fan sounds loud often. I have cleaned it and it still gets loud. I checked the CPU temps and they are getting up to around 67C, which isnt the max. The max temp i found out was 85C. It usually only shuts off when I do HD Editing and am rendering a video file, however the fan is quite loud all the time. I have 1gig of ram and thought I might need more but am not sure. My processor is the T550 1.67 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo with 64 kilobyte primary memory cache, 2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache. Sitting at idle the core temps are around 54C and the HD at 33C. Any ideas on what I should do to solve my problems? Would more ram help?

Depending on the spec, most core 2 duo max temps are in the low to mid 70s. Some of the forums for overclockers I've visited suggest that if you're approaching 70 deg on an overclock, it's not going to be reliable long term.

I would remove the cpu heatsink/fan, clean out the likely old and dried heatpad on the cpu, and put in either a new heatpad, or thermal grease like Arctic Silver 5. Never hurts to run as cool as possible.

Hey I have a similar problem, where my alienware area 51-m notebook just randomly turns off while im in the midst of doing something, and then just like this guy the fan gets really loud and its like i can simply turn it back on and everything comes back, or sometimes i have to wait awhile for it to turn back on......any suggestions?? Im pulling my hair out here. hah. thanks.

That also sounds like a heat issue. If you're system just shuts off and will start back up right away, it tends to be memory issues, but with those you usually get blue screens as well.

If your cpu or gpu overheat, they shut off to protect themselves. The component will have to cool before it'll start up again.

I would consider putting some new thermal paste or heatpads on the cpu first, then if the issue doesn't go away, the gpu.

I put arctic silver 5 thermal grease on my m9700, and the temps dropped more than five deg C and runs very stable temp wise.

thank you very much I will try that and see if it helps.

You can also make sure the vents are dust free, using a compressed air canister will help but also see instructions as provided by Hammerhead. Let us know if this helped.
