How did I end up with 3 XP installations?

Hello...

Re: Acer TravelMate 2480

I deleted all partitions, formatted disk from FAT32 to NTFS and did a clean install of XP Home SP2. I then installed a pared down version of Acer 2480 drivers and software because I hate junk.

Everything is okay except on startup I now have to "choose" one of 3 Home versions listed to boot from? (Notebook was previously owned).

To doublecheck, I booted from XP installation disk and only 1 partition with 1 XP install are shown.

How can previous installations of Home still be present on a newly formatted, cleanly installed disk?

It seems like your MBR is messed up (or "seeing things" ). I've only seen something like that when I was trying to install Windows 2000 on a hard drive that had been partially wiped (started but interrupted before finishing) using dban or similar software. After I used the appropriate software to completely wipe it, it was back to normal and I could format and install a partition just fine.

It's a simple problem to fix. In Run command, type msconfig, and under the boot.ini tab, delete the invalid entries by clicking "check all boot paths" if the option to delete them doesn't automatically pop up.

I checked, and that option is not avail is WinVista. Would have been nice as I have a couple of entries on my MBR I would like to get rid of (Ubuntu)
