I just bought a Dell 1710 laptop with a wireless card but no internal modem. I have an old desktop that connects to the internet by dial-up. (This is the only option for me right now because I live in the boonies!) I want to be able to connect to the internet with my laptop and be able to move around the house. Do I need a modem & router? I can't seem to find a router with a built-in modem. How do I connect it all? Desktop>>>>>router>>>>modem>>>laptop? Please help a very confused newbie to networking! Thanks

So I just got a Lenovo Yoga 13. This is my review. As what I primarily do is writing and programming, having a good keyboard is critical for me, which is why a tablet alone can’t work for me, and...

I have this memory installed in my Inspiron 14R. 6gb (one 2gb & one 4gb). Great performance! I highly recommend Kingston.

from the desktop create a shared wireless connection of course your going to need the dial modem connected to the desktop, and a wireless card (usb or PCI) installed on the desktop as well.
once you have that done you can share the dial modem connection with the wireless card.
Once configured you can login to the shared connection on the laptop that will enable the dial up modem to connect and establish the sahred connection.
I did this when I lived in the boonies myself. other than the 3-6 kb/sec speeds it worked fine.

Do you mean a Dell XPS M1710? You should have a modem daughter card in the system. It's pretty easy to check if it's physically in the system. Flip it over and open up the boot-shaped cover. In that bay you should have your Wi-Fi Card and a Modem daughter card next to it.
Now if you want to be online wirelessly you'll have to share the Dial-up connection on your desktop with your laptop.
