XP Terminal Services problem

Thread Starter
I just did a clean install of XP Pro (new HD, figured I'd start fresh), but apparently Terminal Services (TS) was not installed. Or if it is, neither I nor XP knows where to find it. During installation of XP, I was asked for 'Disc 2', which doesn't exist, and which I've never been asked for in the past (using this exact same install CD). I didn't think anything of it at the time, but I suspect this is the culprit.

All the information I can find says that I should be able to install TS through "Add and Remove Programs - Install Additional Windows Components", but it's not there. Does anyone know how to install TS in some other way?

Thanks in advance for the help.

is mstsc.exe in your Windows folder?

Yes, it's in the system32 folder.

I can run the program, but I still don't see TS when I go to 'Administrative Tasks / Services (Local)'. I believe I'm supposed to see TS there, but correct me if I'm wrong.

History behind noticing (believing) I don't have TS:
When I tried to install Norton Internet Security 2009, it informed me that I was lacking this service, which it requires to install. Norton has some directions on the website (installing an ActiveX control, etc.) but I was unable to do this.

Is this an original XP installation disk?

Yes, it's an original XP Pro SP2 disk. Not pirated in any way, and I've never had problems with this disk in the past.

I was not implying that the disk was being pirated :-)

But sometimes a copy made from an orginal, or burned from an iso can be the cause of the issue.

Have you tried the steps outlining here?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...DCLIENTDL.mspx

there is a module for download on that page as well.

Tried that, but it doesn't work. Half-way through the installation, it says that I already have Remote Desktop Client installed, then it aborts. I do have this installed but still no TS.

Let us try from top:

. Verify that termsrv.dll is found in %windir%\System32\. If not, copy from %windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386\ or extract a copy from your OS CD.

Note:
%windir% is typically C:\Windows or C:\Winnt

. When the termsrv.dll file is in place, perform the following (SP2)

- Start regedit

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\

- Double click on the ImagePath value.

- Change netsvcs to DComLaunch

- Press the OK button, you should have
"%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k DComLaunch "

. Reboot and check if the Terminal Services service is in place.

There was a registry file up there earlier, which I imported. That got me going (at least somewhat). TS finally appeared in my Services list. But when I tried to star the service, I got the following message:

"Could not start the Terminal Services service on Local Computer.

Error 1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service."

I searched and found a zip file with a solution to this: (just run the file and reboot)

Everything works now. Thanks for the help!

I removed the registry file, realising that it was for the pre SP2 modification. Instead wrote it out for SP2 relevant systems.

Glad to hear that you had it sorted out.

I am reposting your link, since the one you had lead to an error.
