How to prevent Mediadirect autorun on inserting dvd?

How do I stop mdirect.exe firing up every time I put a dvd in?

I want to watch a dvd with win media player 11 (it has slo-mo and I can move the progress bar around) but clunky MediaDirect always takes over.

It's enough that MediaDirect has its own button. Can I stop it auto-running all over me?

I tried copying all the WMP11 files into the same folder as mdirect.exe and renaming things so the autorun mdirect.exe would actually start the wmp, which almost worked (there was no audio). Then I thought, that can't be the best way, just to stop mdirect auto running.

It seems incredible that you can't watch DVDs in slo-mo on a dell.

It's a vostro 1500, Win XP pro. Any pointers much appreciated!

Make Media Player 11 your default DVD player and you should be set.

Thanks, Djembe, but that doesn't do it for some reason.

I did check, to be sure: In the WMP options page (file types tab), I've ticked the box to make "dvd video" play with WMP by default.

So I insert the dvd, wmp starts up but then, after about 1 second, MediaDirect kicks in, and if I close MD, I find wmp is no longer running.

Maybe it's wired at a lower level, seeing as how they have a seperate logical partition for MD?

Thanks for trying anyway. Any other suggestions very welcome.

Wild guess here, how about disabling the MediaDirect startup processes or services - if they are such things?

Thanks qhn. You fixed it!

I went to startup tab in sysconfig (after a bit of googling!) and unticked the only exe mentioning mediadirect, something called PCMService.exe .

Restarted XP, and now Media Direct doesn't kick in when I run a dvd, but starts fine when I press the MD button. Success!

I still can't play dvds in wmp11 though. The error message mentions my decoder and I think my decoder is just for wmp10 (according to the ms "decoder checkup utility"). But reinstalling wmp10 is tomorrow's excitement.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

You might want to give K-Lite codec packs a try with your WMP11

Thanks, qhn, good advice. That's worked great. No need for me to roll back to wmp10.
