What models would allow me to swap my hard drive from my old inspiron 1150 to it?

I've found lots of cheapies on http://www.propertyroom.com/searchre...CategoryId=376

you probably have a ide hard drive, so any laptop that accepts ide hard drives will most likely work

should be able to look up what type with your service tag on the dell website. or just take a look, an ide hd has pins sticking out of the hd, an sata has a connector. if your laptop is older than 2005, its most likely ide

though most of thenewer latops pretty much use Sata these days

Mines about 3 or 4 years old.

so most likely ide, but you need to look up the specs and make sure

Your Inspiron 1150 takes an ATA6 hard drive (IDE as others including the industry incorrectly state it).

All of the Dells listed in that link you provided will accept the drive. I'm pretty sure all the Thinkpads are old enough as well. As for the HP/Compaqs I don't know.

ok, ata6 then...

Would any of you recommend one use older(CHEAP) model over another?

I'm buy a MAC soon either way, But would love to save my old lap top.

I know this strays from the topic but why do you need a laptop that can fit your PATA hard drive? You would still have to reformat the old hard drive to have it work on the new computer. It would only save you time to use the old hard drive if you had a data partition and a partition for the OS. Still, the amount of time saved really isn't worth it IMO since its a one time thing. Pretty much any used laptop will come with a hard drive so I don't see why you just don't transfer your files over to the new hard drive. You can always get an external enclosure for the older hard drive.

I'm not sure I understand you completely.
My old LapTop dont work,
The fans bad & while trying to clean it I messed up the screen & it dont work now.

But I have lots of pictures that are important to me on it & I though if I swapped the hard drive I'd get to keep them that way?

Are you saying my thought proccess on this is wrong?

oh geeze...

grab up an external and use a computer to burn the pictures to disc. you will most likely have to format to get another laptop to run...

I have an external hard drive, but would need to be able to view my screen to see what I'm doing.
Or if you mean an external screen, I tried that already & seem to be having issues there as well.

Use the external drive enclosure with your "used laptop" and pull all your files over.

Either way i would go the xternal case route and test it n a friends computer to verify you can acess the files before spending any money on a used laptop

From what I understand Dave, this guy just wants to keep his old files (pictures). So he doesn't even need to get a used laptop. Just buy an external enclosure that fits 2.5" PATA hard drives and transfer them to another computer (or just keep them on the old hard drive). He said he was getting a new laptop so no point in getting a used one as well to view his files.

I think any of these would work even though they're listed as IDE instead of PATA: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...name=USB%202.0
