Emachines M6809 won't boot from cd, Help

This laptop has been through hell, I've fixed a cracked LCD and my cracked hinge. Now I want to reinstall XP, but it will not boot from the cd. I get the "press a key to boot from cd", which I do and it just sits there. And sometimes jsut shuts down after a while. Yet in WindowsXP it sees the cd fine and can read it. But if I stick in a DVD-R it thinks it is a RW and wants to erase it and format it. So I believe the issue is the drive. Is there a way to boot from USB, or anyother way? I have a pcmia cd drive, but it doesn't seem to like that either.

time for an optical drive replacement? You can try to take the optical drive out and reseat it first and see.

I've tried another drive, same result, so it is not the drive.

Tried a clean re.install of the OS, or refresh the chipset driver?

Well that's the problem, I want to reinstall, but can't since I cannot boot from anything.

Can you copy the chipset driver to the hard drive via USB, and then update it from there first?

cheers ...
