my warranty had expired long time ago they sent me a refurbished 7900 gs which has lost its functioning completely with my warranty expired, whats my best option here? will dell allow me to rebuy its warranty? (like for another 2 years) or if not, which mobile video card thats suitable to replace my busted 7900 gs? (used to be a 7800) any other options?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

can i get a less good card like 6800 go or even mx440 to make it work? as i know that there is no built-in video card on the motherboard right?

if you had just expired recently maybe, if it has been more than a few weeks, No your out of luck.

Your GPU choices are as follows

7900GS or ATI x1400 with no mods

7900GTX, 7950 GTX, FX2500, FX3500 with a minor case mod.

Big problem is these cards have gone up in value becuase they are harder to get, one member here just picked up the ATI x1400 for around $ 150.00 USD and that card is a down grade from your 7900GS

the 79xx series card will run around $ 300.00 USD or more.

You may get lucky and fnd one for less, but be aware there are many dead cards being sold out there these days, make sure your dealing with a reputable person.

Dave is correct, only buy from a reputable seller with a good return policy.

The BIOS support is definitely there. The only problem you run into is the footprint (physical layout) of the GPU. If you get a single card GPU it should be a drop in. However, if you get an older dual pipe GPU (7800 GTX, 6800 Ultra, etc), then you will run into problems fitting it in. On one hand, you'd have to break off the tab that prohibits any dual pipe GPU from being installed. Then you'd have even more problems because the heatpipe that extends to the left on older GPU's doesnt have the same curvature as the newer GPU's. You'd either have to bend the heatpipe (not a good idea IMO) or reuse your old GPU heatsink. When reusing your old heatsink, not that locations of memory chips on the 7900 series (and 7800 go) is not the same as that of the 7800 GTX and 6 series. To fix this, you must realign the thermal pads on the heatsink to correspond to the different memory locations on the card.

As you can see, its quite a bit simpler if you use an older GPU with a single heat pipe. However the difficulty of putting in an older GPU with dual heat pipes is only about 6/10.
