Anyone install aftermarket Solid State Drives in a Sony?

Thread Starter
I have a VGN-Z590. Pretty much fully loaded with blu-ray burner.

When I got my laptop I immediately swapped out the drive for a 300GB 7200 RPM drive.

I know they are still not cheap - but for right around $500 you can get 256MB SSD drives.

Has anyone done this? Have you seen any improvement in performance? I have been debating on doing this for several reasons.

1. Speed (is it really faster? I have read were some systems can boot up in 10 seconds)

2. Battery - has anyone seen an increase in battery life?

3. Heat & Sound - I assume the system is nearly silent with an SSD. How about heat - does it run cooler?

I would appreciate any feedback from anyone that has gone this route.

Many forum users have swapped out HDD for SSD. Performance improvement is noted, not so transparent are battery and heat and noise.

I personally do not feel that it is yet a good investment in comp's improvement unless the price goes a bit lower still.

cheers ...

Short answer -- it's worth it. I installed a 128gb drive in a z591ub and also an SR240N. The machine will boot and shutdown faster, the apps will start faster. The pain of installing in the Z can be kept to a minimum if you're careful with screws and are delicate how you remove the keyboard. I couldn't sqeeze the ssd into the drive housing but i was able to get the case shut cleanly and without any real problems. . Just take your time and expect to go through a dozen or so screws. It's not upgrade friendly like the RAM is.
