DVD-RW drive won't recognize

Thread Starter
I have a Gateway running on XP. The DVD-RW drive won't read disks. I tried uninstalling the drivers and then letting them plug and play on startup. It worked once, but shortly thereafter stopped working again. I also took my computer back to a restore point, which worked temporarily. The drive is a Philips DVD+-RW SDVD8820. I would greatly appreciate any help that I can get.
Thank you.

I recommend that you review the apps used in conjunction with your drive, since it worked temporarily and then stopped.

I can try that, but gateway told me to delete my upper and lower optic drivers, and now I can't reinstall them. Any suggestions?

. Try remove the optical drive, restart w/o it, then reinstall.

. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip - this utility can set/refresh the device to be recognised again with device manager
