2K Boston Job Posting Reveals Details on Next Project

What's next for the people who brought us Bioshock? A multiplayer FPS is on the way from 2K Boston.

By Dustin Quillen, 02/02/2009

Bioshock may not have had -- or even needed -- multiplayer when it nabbed our coveted Videogame of the Year Award for 2007, but that doesn't mean the masterminds at 2K Boston should be typecast as a single-player-only development team. According to recent job listings on Gamasutra (via V for Videogames), the studio that delivered us to Rapture is seeking out some new blood to take us somewhere else entirely: a multiplayer first-person shooter. Specifically, the folks at 2K Boston are in search of both a lead mutliplayer designer and a lead multiplayer engineer for their next, currently-unnamed project. Details remain scarce, but the job descriptions themselves contain a handful of revelations about this secretive shooter -- including the potential for some form of persistent online world:
  • This position requires a high degree of creativity. You will be required to work with the single-player team to form a "vision" of the multiplayer experience and use that vision to inform your design decisions. From there, you will help build a multiplayer design team and be responsible to guide your team through the entire production cycle.
  • Prior experience designing first-person shooter games is an absolute must. Understanding of online persistence is preferred but not required. MMO design or production experience also preferred.
  • Extending and enhancing Unreal Engine 3 with proprietary networking tech to address gameplay, performance, platform, production, tools, and QA needs.
  • Interfacing with Microsoft, Sony, and other providers for matching-making and other services.
So 2K Boston's next game will definitely have both single-player and some kind of online multiplayer, possibly incorporating a dash of MMO methodology. It would also appear to use the very same Unreal Engine 3 technology that powered Bioshock, and will likely show up on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Beyond that, we'll probably have to wait for Ken Levine and friends to formally raise the curtain on whatever they have brewing at 2K Boston.

BioShock 2 Destined for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360

No word on whether "Sea of Dreams" will be released simultaneously on all systems.

By Stephany Nunneley, 10/24/2008

The new teaser trailer for BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams may have many questioning just what 2K Marin has in store for us with such archaic imagery. What or whom survived the last round in Rapture remains to be seen, but what we do know, thanks to a recent quote from 2K representative Charlie Sinhaseni on GameSpot, is that the game is "destined" for the PlayStation 3, Windows-based PCs, and the Xbox 360. While a psychic barnyard animal could have predicted that, what we are still unsure of is if each port of the game will be released simultaneously or not. Hopefully, this time around that will be the case so PS3 users will not have to once again wait a whole painful year to get the game on their system.
When BioShock 2 was officially announced back in March, Take-Two stated that not only would Ken Levine be involved in some capacity but also that the game would be released sometime during the company's Q4 fiscal year, which means we can hopefully expect it to hit between August and October 2009.
Granted, that is over a year away and a lot can happen between now and then, but let's keep our fingers crossed that this time around everyone will be able venture back into Rapture on the same day. In the meantime, just keep your eyes glued to news.1UP.com for a more official announcement.

First Teaser Trailer for BioShock 2

PS3 version of BioShock gets sequel teaser, game subtitled 'Sea of Dreams.'

By Steve Watts, 10/16/2008
The PS3 version of BioShock may not have its glitches patched in time for launch, but one goodie that fans will appreciate is the debut teaser trailer for BioShock 2. While we can't glean much from the trailer, it does give us a subtitle to go by, "Sea of Dreams." That's an awfully cheerful sounding name, isn't it? Check out the new trailer above in all its subtle creepiness.

Bioshock 2 features co-op? According to a co-optimus member who got his April addition of Game Informer early, that's what is featured in the upcoming Bioshock 2 article.

I'll be VERY interested in seeing how this is implemented.

more info:

Quote:
-You play as Jack Abbott a private investigator searching for one of the girls kidnapped by Big Sister.

- Jack won’t be the only one investigating Rapture. At some point in the story, Soviet agents arrive from a submarine, hoping to acquire Adam and use it to gain an advantage over the Americans in the Cold War. Soviet enemies will be much smarter than splicers, using cover and flanking maneuvers and working in groups. As the game progresses they will begin splicing themselves and be able to use plasmids against you. The Soviets and splicers will fight against each other and the player can use that to their advantage. ”

-Game takes place in 1967, 7 years after the original

-A cutscene starts the game off In New York City as Jack intercepts the Big Sister kidnapping his daughter in his beachhouse. He follows it to the near by shores as it submerges into the water

- Epic boss battles and underwater gameplay. Much of Rapture is now flooded and you will need to don a diving suit to explore these areas as well as venture outside Rapture itself. An underwater boss fight was shown with a gigantic squid, which can cloak itself and use its massive tentacles to smash into Rapture and hurl debris. One of the concept artworks hinted at a boss battle with a mutated, spliced rhino in Rapture’s zoo.

Solving the whole Big Sister debate:

-Only one Big Sister (Mastermind of game)

-Big Daddies are no longer in the game, but new enemies include dogs and soviets

Some other goodies
-Completely new levels of Rapture, including a fully explorable zoo.
-Underwater exploration levels
-New weapons and plasmids (Including a telepathy and time control)
-Challenge maps
-2 Player co-op. (No mention on who second player is)
-New Health and Revival System
