mx6453 bios problems

Thread Starter
so i have been having this issue where when i use my fn keys like adjusting volume/brightness my screen goes black with blue dots in the corner for a few seconds and then goes away.
im almost positive its my bios because the fn keys operate via the bios/chipset. correct me if im wrong.
so i need either a updated bios for XP. if theres no update i need a original bios file.
my current bios is 84.03

You are using the correct and latest BIOS for your MX6453, I have no issues w/ XP Media Center as well as Vista.....the 84.03 is the original BIOS that came with your notebook, the BIOS is just that, it has very little to do with how the OS works, BIOS updates only fixes problem w/ hardware, like memory, chipset/Video card, make sure your chipset drivers are up to date, also, you may benefit form the latest Video driver update as well.....the hyper-memory, 256mb Video function only works in XP, it is unavailable in Vista.......just FYI

Right, my problem is hardware, i formatted my hdd and installed fedora 10 and it did the same thing in linux.

i tried updating everything but it wont work.
maybe my bios is bad, could someone send me one?
(im running XP MCE)

It will work, I'm using that BIOS (Gateway BIOS version: 84.06) even tho it says it's for vista, I can confirm it works w/ XP, give it a try, what have you got to loose at this point, if it fixes your problem? after all, it is the latest BIOS Version for your mobo.....

try some of the suggestions in this thread regarding BIOS for XP. Just a warning, if you hose it, it is your doing.

How about a dual boot? Vista original and XP MCE? then eventually getting rid of the Vista partition?

Cool, denb45 came to the rescue! :-)

denb45 were you having the same issue or did you update for another reason? did it upgrade your RAM support? i noticed you have 3gb instead of the maximum 2..

And qhn, im guessing that would work well but i would rather not dish out the cash for vista, and dont want to waste time "borrowing" it..

I updated the to the latest BIOS when I had my notebook over 2 1/2 yrs ago
when I bought my MX6453 it came with an upgrade DVD for Vista Home Premium
however, if your happy with XP-MCE OS ( like most people are) 2GB of RAM is more than enough
if you ever plan on buying another notebook PC in the near future, you will be forced to use Vista or Windows 7.
I haven't seen the specs change very much on what's offered in Todays notebook market, I see they all come with bigger HD, and more RAM (4 GB) 64bit OS, but not much else.......

Okay so if i upgrade the bios to the vista one without installing vista, it will work?

windows 7 maybe, but never windows vista, my dad has vista on his gateway and it crashes every time i use it..
plus, linux is developing quite well and the fedora 64 bit os is alot more stable than you'd think.. i would rather install linux before vista.

Yes, it will work for both Vista SP1 as well as XP MCE 2005 w/ SP3, I have two HDD's one has MCE and the other has Vista, I've never had any problems with Vista what-so-ever, (if you're just gonna run xp, than I wouldn't bother upgrading the BIOS, if you don't have any problems with the current one)

FYI: just make sure if you do update the BIOS, I'd save the old one on a CD somewhere, you never know what will happen with a BIOS update, also, PLEASE NOTE, if you do this, your on your own, if something go's wrong Gateway will not help you, you'll have to pay gateway to ship & repair your notebook, if something go's wrong..............GOOD LUCK!

youre right,
but what do i have to lose right?
the worst thing that could happen is that i may end up buying a new mobo..

ill give it a shot & let you know what happens

okay. so i did the update, but it didnt fix it. now theres just a different patten of blue dots..

Im clueless as to why this is happening because its not a problem in windows, its some type of hardware issue, and im not the only one with this problem

I don't have this problem w/ XP MCE 2005, in Vista I do see the Brightness bar adjustment screen appear at the very top left hand of my screen, that is what I see in Vista, and it's not just blue-dots like you describe? I have never seen this in XP, why don't you just re-install the factory Image and start all-over-again
before you do this, make sure you back up whatever you want to keep, if you still see this problem after that, then you may need to send your notebook to
Gateway/Acer Repairs 1394 Eberhardt Road, Temple, TX you can call them for a price quote 866-239-390 or 1-408-0808 when you call ask for Level 2 Tech support, if you want to go that route

What happens when you just have XP, without Fedora? does it still do this? if it still does and you just cannot live with this, it's gonna cost you big bucks, if you send it to Gateway for a new Mobo, it will cost for you to ship to and back to you, also, the cost of the mobo, (about $300 dollars), when it's all said and done, you might as well buy a New Notebook, but, if you do, it will come pre-installed with Vista , and nothing you can do about what OS it will ship with.........Good luck with that......I hear some of the newer notebooks are going for about $299 to $399 and up depending on what specs you want and how much Ram it comes with.....I am not going to buy another notebook untill they come out with a AMD Phenom Triple-Core processor, and at least 6 to 8 GB of Ram, and 64bit OS, so, that will most likely be a long time from now if you look at what is on the market now in notebooks.......

ive tried it with just fedora and dualboot.

hah well if it comes to that i'd rather do it myself and save $200 but my dad has a company laptop thats a newer upgraded model from mine so i might buy it from his office.
hah, i bet you could build one of those. you'd have to do some major bios editing.

i have a "micronPC" thats waay old and it has 4 RAM slots
i wonder if i put 2gb in each if it will support all of it?

You should try it with just XP in it, I bet it won't do that with a Full factory restore, if it doesn't, then that means nothing is wrong with your motherboard at all, but, I'm guessing here?

You could try to put in 4GB, but if the BIOS doesn't support that, it may not work

as for building a laptop, your only limited to what hardware is currently on the market for sale, now a Desktop, you can do that much RAM 6GB or 8GB not with a laptop tho
