Buying a new desk...

So I am in the market for a new desk. Really want something that is kind of "L" shaped so that I can keep my desktop on it, as well as have a place to put my laptop if needed.

I was looking at getting this here desk made by Bush.
http://www.computerdesks.com/compute...ionalhutch.cfm

With or without the hutch. Will probably try to get it without the hutch for now, then add it on later.

Just not sure what I really want. I am kind of limited on the size though. The desk posted above is 59.63" along both sides. I am very limited by the "left" side of the desk, if looking at it directly. (Not sure if that would be considered the length of the desk or the width) It can NOT be no bigger than 59". The 59.63" in pushing it VERY tight.

So I'd like to know what kind of desks you guys may be using, where'd you buy it from and how much. Never ordered a desk online before, nor have I ever heard of computerdesks.com.

Right now I am using an L-shaped desk that has a lot of storage space (cabinets, shelves and drawers everywhere). It appears to have about the same amount of desk space as the one you linked to, which may be enough for you, even with a laptop and some paperwork. However, the two things you might not like about that desk are the CPU cabinet (it may restrict circulation if left unmodified, and may not even be big enough for your desktop if you have a gaming rig or a custom build), and the pull-out keyboard tray. I have found that those trays do not comfortably fit a keyboard and mouse pad, especially if you have a gaming keyboard with lots of macro keys.

What are you going to be doing on your desk? Gaming? Work/homework? Hardware modding? Do you like a lot of storage above your head, under the desk, to your side? When you are working on your desk, do you like to spread out or do you only need enough space for a few things?

I like having a lot of surface space, and I am changing my living room around, so I am looking at this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/ca...kspaces/11716/ It has around the same amount of surface area as my current desk, but it has more depth, which comes in handy because I am usually doing more than one project on my desk at a time. If you are going to be using your desk a lot, you may want to look for something similar. A few desks under the "corner desks" category on the website you linked to are similar.

I probably wont be using the keyboard tray. I just do not like them. I always just put the keyboard/mouse on the desk.

I am very limited on the size I can go though. I have about 59" on the left wall and a good 85" on right wall to work with. The bedroom is rather small, but the rent is virtually free, so I'm not complaining about that.

As for the air circulation, I did think about that. Nothing my 3" circle saw w/ few 80mm case fans and a modded computer PSU to power a few of them can't solve.

I will mostly be using my laptop anyway. It's just nice to have a hard surface to put the laptop on, especially when I am gaming since I use a mouse when I play games.

I hardly ever use the desktop. It's been in storage for like 6 months now. Especially since the laptop is more powerful than the desktop anyway, I'm not even sure I'll be using the desktop much. Other than storing lots of files or doing projects "in the background" so I can play on the laptop. (uploading files to game servers, web sites, ftp)

Not too worried about "storage" space either, that's why I'm probably going to get the hutch added later. It's nice to be able to put CD/DVDs close by, but out of the way. Although on the right wall, I'd really like to put some kind of chester drawer, for my clothes. Using a cheap plastic 3 drawer from Wal-Mart right now. That would take up from the 85" of space available though.

I would have to say what I would do most on the desk would be sitting down playing games, surfing the web and researching. Gaming would be done on the laptop though, as would most of the other things. I should probably just sell the desktop after writing this, it has made me realize just how little I do use it. LOL

One thing I would like to be able to do though is have a nice place to put a nice printer. I'm do photography as a hobby and I sometimes like to print my own pictures. Granted the printer I plan on getting will not necessarily have to sit on the desk, it will have some type of networking abilities built in. (wireless or LAN)

For your uses it sounds like that desk, or a similar one, would be okay for you.

Putting the keyboard and mouse on the desktop will work, especially if you're not gaming on the PC. I have two printers and neither are on my desk. Maybe you should look for a bookshelf with some drawers or an armoire so you have a shelf for the printer and drawers for clothes? That way you won't have to sacrifice work space.

That's not a bad idea on the armorie part. Would give me a few drawers for the few clothes that I don't hang up, as well as give me a nice place to have a little extra storage.

How big are they typically? Guess I need to start searching for one and seeing what they have available.

I would also like to have a place to put the TV, though the location the armiorie would be wouldn't be a good place, I was thinking of maybe mounting it on the wall at the foot of my bed. Maybe mounting it on the ceiling? Has anyone actually done that before?

You could get an angled mount for the TV.

Armoires come in all sizes---cheap KMart ones that are 5 feet tall, and your grandparents' old 8-foot solid wood armoire. You could always get a short one and put the TV on top of it.

Hmm, I just had an idea. Well not literally just now, but a few hours ago I thought about it.

For the TV I think I am just going to get a 1080P projector and a nice screen that drops down from the ceiling.

I use an old Walnut office desk that I paid $60 for from a used furniture dealer. Thing weighs a metric ton and has the glass that sits on the top. Has enough room for my Laptop and at one time I had 3 desktops sitting on it in addition to my laptop. Biggest single person desk I've ever seen. It's almost as big as a partners desk. You might find a really nice piece if you shop flea markets, used furniture stores, and garage sales.

That Bush doesn't look like a bad piece though. And really they're pretty good as far as RTA stuff goes. It's just that RTA is such a pain in the butt to move.
