Do i have to buy a new copy

K so my laptop is pretty much dead, wont be using it ever again. And it has Vista Home Premium 32Bit on it.
I have decided to make a desktop instead, cheaper in my opinion, and I don't really need a laptop anymore. So i was wondering if i can transfer the OS to my desktop. I heard you just have to type in the Key, and if it does not go through you activate it by phone. Is this true? Can i do this. It would in turn save me around 150$. Also if this does work can i really upgrade it to a 64Bit for 10$ or something?
Thanks in advance.

OEM key, it is gonna be tough. Retail key, sure. Either way, the minute the system is being drastically modified, it will require an activation.

cheers ...

When it tries to activate over the web it's either going to work or fail. If it fails they give you an IVR to call. the IVR will ask you if you have the software installed on only one machine. You then provide the code listed on your screen to the IVR and you in turn get back a key to enter into Windows.

After you enter the key it's either going to activate or fail.

Hope it works for you!

an OEM license is tied to the machine it comes with, by the terms of the license it is not allowed

and most activate with SLP data and the actual key is worthless to the activation system, its just a proof of license

Plus, I think the 64-bit verison would be more than $10.

thats approximately the shipping price for getting 64-bit discs shipped to you from Microsoft. thats for Retail copies only, which, minus Ultimate, only have 32-bit in the box.
