Dell Inspiron 9300 Processor Upgrade?

Thread Starter
I have a Dell 9300 that's been serving me quite well over the years. I'm using a Pentium M (730) 1.6 GHz processor. For the moment instead of buying a new laptop I'm interested in upgrading the processor. The Bios shows that it can detect and appears to be able to use a dual core processor but none of the 9300's were ever sold that way.

The motherboard uses a m-FCPGA socket. Does anyone know or has tried to use a dual core processor in this motherboard? I'm even curious as a project but, if someone has info/data on this I would truly appreciate the info. I have a 250 GHz harddrive and 2GHz on the RAM. Looking to speed this thing up a bit before finally putting her out to pasture.

If your notebook came with a Pentium M, then you are limited to upgrading to Pentium M processors. The best you can get is a 2.26 Ghz Pentium M 780 or, if you're lucky, you can try pin-modding a Pentium M 745 to 2.4 Ghz.

if your gpu is 400 fsb, you can pin mod it to 2 ghz pretty easily. but the added performance is not much

I disagree with you there. I replaced the 1.86 Ghz Pentium M 750 I originally got with my computer with a modded Pentium M 735 (running at 2.26 Ghz) and I noticed a speed increase. True, increasing the speed by 400 Mhz isn't going to be the same as adding another core, but it was definitely worth it to me.

I can concur with Djembe, my i9300 came with a P-M 740 (1.73GHz) which I upgraded to a P-M 780 (2.26GHz). Although, there was nearly a 30% increase in CPU clock speed I only gained about 10-20% in "real world" performance, depending upon the application.

As far as "real world" performance is concerned, the biggest upgrades one would notice, you've already made. RAM and hard drive speed are far more noticeable an upgrade than a faster CPU. However, since you've already done these about the only other thing you can do is a CPU upgrade, but I would caution that doing so is only cost effective if you get your new processor at a great price and plan on keeping the laptop for a couple of more years.

Just my 2 cents.

Ciao

i was comparing the gain in performance to that of c2d. with a pin moded 1.6, i didnt see much improvement but it is free so anything is good

It is definitely not a 400 MHz FSB CPU since it ends in a 0 (730) and not a 5.

Getting a 1.6 GHz 400 MHz FSB CPU and pinmodding it to 2.13 GHz would result in a nice performance upgrade if you're used to 1.6 GHz.
