Raid 0 & Raid 1

I have read through wikipedia what the differences are between RAID 1 and RAID 0 and it said for RAID 0

"RAID 0 is also used in some gaming systems where performance is desired and data integrity is not very important. However, real-world tests with games have shown that RAID-0 performance gains are minimal, although some desktop applications will benefit.[1][2] Another article examined these claims and concludes that "Striping does not always increase performance (in certain situations it will actually be slower than a non-RAID setup), but in most situations it will yield a significant improvement in performance." [3]"

Basically I want to know since my notebook is a gaming notebook as well as doing normal everyday computer stuff which RAID would be better for my system. These are the two Hard Drives which are in my notebook:
Western Digital Scorpio 320 GB 7200 RPM

Also I would like to know if I have to do a compete format of my notebook in order to use RAID. Basically is it worth it or should I just use it as extra storage space which I really don't need since my desktop has 1.5 TB worth of space in which I can just copy and move things over.

If I do have to do a reformat is there some way I can put a mirror image of my hard drive onto a portable hard drive and just move it back over? If so how would I go about doing that?

Thank you for your time

Raid 0 will be faster, how noticeably faster is hard to tell, system startup and game level load times will prolly increase to some noticable extent but other day to day tasks u prolly wont see a noticeable difference. Also Raid0 is more power hungry cuz u always use both drives so shorten up ur battery life too.

Im not sure cuz I aint Raid'd (haha) in a while but it all depends on the raid chip and supporting software if it will let you build a raid 0 from an existing disk, so look at your raid software.

Use a version of Ghost or like program to make an image of your harddrive, reformat, create raid, once raid is done it looks like a single drive for most others perspective, then reinstall the image back to the new unified drive.

RAID 0 is for performance, while RAID 1 is for backup (it mirrors everything from one hard drive on the other). Since you seem to be concerned with losing your data, you might want to use RAID 1.

"Backup" is the wrong term to use, it is "redundant" the big difference is that in a redundant setup any error introduced to one drive will be done on both drives, so if you accidentally delete a file, raid1 wont help you at all, whereas with a backup, you just go to the backup(drive) and restore the file.

Keep in mind RAID will only effect the hd's. RAID0 will make reading and writing to the hd's faster, but it doesn't affect the other components in the system.

For gaming, the drives are used to load data into the memory, the games are actually run from the memory, so it won't affect gameplay, only the time it takes to load levels.

I had RAID0 on one of my systems, and I didn't notice much of a difference. Slightly lower load times between levels if anything. I prefer to keep my drives seperate to make partitioning and manipulation easier.

RAID0 will help for things like data transfer, moving large files from one system to another. That's why RAID is used with servers as it speeds up transfers.

To enable RAID0, you just need to turn it on in the bios, then reinstall the operating system since it will need to be installed across both drives rather than just the one.

RAID1 won't effect performance. It just records the same data to both drives at the same time so if one drive fails, you've still got the data accessable on the other.
