Left4Dead on a mobile system? Am I alone here?

Hello

Anyone else here that has been bitten by the L4D bug? I started playing this game the same day the demo was released, and immediatley bought it when the full game was released. I was hooked.

Not only was it one of the most awesome games out there, my hardware loved it. I could play 1280x800 with everything on high, and blast 80fps on average. Never did I see it drop below 60 fps - dozens of zombies on fire? No problem.

Then the game update came out... Rendering the game unplayable on my hardware. I got hit bad by the performance bug, really bad.
Valve forums L4D section: any one else notice a performance hit with the new patch

There has been a fix or two out, and it has apparently solved most of these issues, for me however it has done nothing. My performance in all Source based games are now completley unplayable. Thanks to a Steam client update propagating this bug to all my Source games.

Playing the game at the lowest settings I start out with more than 200 fps, and it slowly decreases (over 5 minutes or so) until I hover around the 20 fps mark, dropping to below 10 when there is action.

CS:S is having a tad different issue, here it roams the high 200 fps while I dont really need it, and as soon as I need my frames it consistently drops to 15-25.

I have tried everything at this point, reinstalled Windows three times, done a complete re-download of L4D multiple times. Tried most graphics drivers under the sun - my performance is unaffected.

My friends have seen a performance drop after the update, but no one has been hit as hard as me.

You can imagine how frustrating it is when my friends 7600gt SLI setup whops my rig back to the stoneage - before the update I had more than twice his performance, on much higher settings - Now he has three times mine.

Anyone else experiencing this on their rig? Is it a Quadro or mobile gpu issue? Laptop issue? Or is my graphics card on the way out?

Should be mentioned that all my other games have no noticeable slowdown - UT3/UT2K4, BF2, Stalker etc. is running as good as they always have - meaning there *should* be nothing physically wrong here.

i have it on my 1530 (running under Windows 7), I just played it a week ago the only problem I had was occasional lagging of my network connection, causing my roomate (who was playing on his 1530 under Vista) to lose connection for ~30 seconds while its waiting. locally hosted game instead of on a dedicated server. neither of us had any framerate issues though

Interesting. What kind of chip is in the 1530 and what settings are you running at? What is your average framerate?

From looking at that thread I dont know what help you're gonna get from here. I'm not sure if anyone here plays L4D (I have before but along time ago and not on my computer). Sounds like a Steam "problem" and nothing hardware or external software wise.

Yeah, I know. Its a shame really. I was just wondering if this was a common trend on Quadros or other mobile gpu's, so I could iron out the creaks, if you know what I mean.

I am getting frustrated to the point I am considering to buy a completley new gaming system tomorrow (have some outstanding store credit here and there, and some parts laying around, so can do so for cheap), its a real shame thought, because Steam games are the only thing my laptop dont want to play nice with.

Just noticed a massive performance drop in stalker as well, only shame most of my games are not installed - I'm on my third reinstall in less than two weeks after all - and my view has been kind of one sided... It could be that stalker does not like my current (LV2GO 181.22.1) drivers, but I'm seriosly starting to wonder at this point.

What are the classic signs of a dying GPU? Could a massive framedrop like this be a linked to a "going bad" GPU, especially considering I have not seen any bad textures or random crashes, just a performance decrease? And after some careful Arctic silvering of the GPU three years ago I have never seen it above 90 degrees celsius...

I just upgraded my NBD warranty for two additional years only a few weeks ago, so its not like that would be the end of the world... Except for the fact that I've grown a liking to my GPU, it has been so nice to me, up until now.

Never mind all that. After a system reboot Stalker was back to its usual and beautiful performance. This is indeed only affecting my steam games.

It seems to work fine on my computer.

L4D runs fine here, and had the steam update in jan. Great game, more cpu than gpu demanding so should run on just about anything

I posted which drivers i'm using in the drivers section

I don't play on my Latitude, but I haven't had any performance drops on my Desktop system. I'm just running stock ATI Catalysts.

Seeing though as Stalker is also performing similarly I don't think your problem is with any sort of update that Steam made.

He said the Stalker performance returned to normal (he edited the post). I don't really know what the problem is. This is one of those deals where I'd need hands on to help.
