P-6822 multiple monitors

I am attempting to connect my Gateway laptop to my JVC 42" LCD with a HDMI cable. I had my ps3 hooked up via HDMI cable and it worked perfectly. In the past I've hooked up my laptop to my parents Samsung LCD and the computer recognized it right off the bat. Trying to get it to connect it to the JVC is a problem.

My laptop is a Gateway P-series model P-6822. I have all the current drivers. Wondering if anyone has attempted the same thing and if it did or didnt work.

According to specs, you only have VGA output. You propably would need a converter/adapter.
