Toshiba Confirm GF FX 5600 Go Laptop

Toshiba have confirmed via press release (Toshiba Europe) and Nvidia / Toshiba Presentation (Video available from www.nvidia.com)

That the new 5200 Series in stores Mid April will contain the new Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 Go graphics card (Good news thought they might got for the slightly less performing 5200 Go).

The Press release also states a new Screen Technology (1600x1200) with + / - 70 deg viewing angle. But whether this has been changed since the 5205-s703/4 I am not sure - That screen was just the best - Can it get better than that?

Hopefully they will combine it with either a 2.4 P4M or a 1.6 PM.

The Harmon Kardon Speakers and DVD-r/rw drive are just bliss as well.

I think its quite funny, have you seen the acual AGP card? it takes up the PCI slot next to it because of a "Big Honkin"© cooling system that moves over to the next slot bay... I'd be really impressed if they solve the heat issues and put it into a ultraportable, or even a desktop replacement.

Not as funny as it possibly beating out the 4200go to the marketplace (those don't actually ship til April as well IIRC)

No Kidding. Nvidia really screwed up the 4200 Go. Its really starting to show now that its about to be replaced with the new model before even being released. It wont even have a chance to survive...

They must have lost a ton of money on it since it had been out for some time now but no manufacturer acually adopted it. Bad move NVIDIA.

The 4100 go card was not really screwed up by Nvidia more like the laptop manufacturers.

The 4200go was available to OEM's at the same time as the Radeon 9000 just that the Laptop manufacturers for some reason did not adopt it - possibly due to heat issues that can now be over come.

With regard to it being put in a desktop replacement - There will not be any issues with this indeed if it is going into a toshiba 5200 which is a fairly slim machine.

1)Availability: not even close. The m9 was released last summer, the 4200 was "released" around xmas.

2)Why it wasn't adopted: It's a sucky card I don't know what nvidia were thinking - the m9 was already out & adopted by manufacturers, & nvidia "released" a card inferior in most ways to the m9 6+ months later. Of course no one adopted it. In hindsight, they should have just skipped it.

The one redeeming thing about the 4200 is that it may be worth money as a collectible someday, since there are going to be almost no 4200s actually sold

I really hope the mobile fx turns out to be a good card. ATI needs to be pushed or they'll get complacent.

IMHO the 4200go was simply anounced to steal the thunder away from the M9 which had been praised all throughout the industry. They never expected it to go wide but their real mobile line (FXgo) wasn't ready yet. In the eyes of the industry they needed something for those 6 months to counter ATI...enter 4200go. Then they could say they have the most powerful mobile chip out there regardless if it is shipping or not. The chip itself seems like a hackjob and not much of a mobile chip.

The 4200 is actually a better performing card than the M9 is if you check out benchmarks of the M9 and 4200 in a similar spec machine.

Of course the M10 will walk all over it tho

It is a much better performing chip than the M9 but a "mobile" chip it is not IMHO.

Agreed it does run a touch on the warm side - however they seem to have got round that with improved cooling on the new machines - Might even be the reason there was a delay in implementation into the laptop market until now.

Nobody knows that the M10 will be better than the FX5600 Go. If the 4200 Go was a faster chip than the M9, then isn't it a possibility that the FX5600 Go could be a faster chip than the Radeon 9600?
In looking at the specs, didnt the FX 5600 Go and the Radeon 9600 Pro had similar speeds?
Unbiased responses please...

I suspect both chips will have their own strengths/weaknesses. My guess is NVidia will have a slight speed advantage in various resolutions however, I expect ATI to take a big lead in virtually all benchmarks that use AA/AF.

To be honest I do not think there will be much of a difference between the 5600 go and the M10.

It is possible as usual that the M10 will outpeform on AA as they usually always do.

However although the ATI will be a faster card - I am a great believer in the NVidia drivers so I think I will be going down that route.

The other thing to think about is the speed of the laptop cards are getting so fast now - the limiting factor will probably be the TFT Displays with regard to 60hz and FPS

I am intrigued by the new screen toshiba are announcing with the new 5205 in April - I spoke to them today and they are very cagey about it however they did say it was ALL NEW technology over the current UXGA 1600x1200 they ship in the S703 machines (Superfine / Ultrasharp type display - which is awesome).

So maybe they are using the new LCD's with the 16ms response times which would be great.........
