Is the motherboard bad ? solo 5300

I have a few questions to try to get the laptop back up for my daughter .
I have an older solo 5300 and it turns on , i can get to the bios . It shows the correct memory count , hard drive size ect. It doesn't have a working cd drive so i installed windows on a different laptop and installed it . It boots fine till it gets to the gateway logo then the logo goes away and then i get a blinking _ in the left corner of the screen . ( i get one beep at that point )

I reseated the memory , tried a different hard drive . Tried with and without a floppy drive hooked up . Same thing .

The laptop does not have a battery ( running of the power cord ) Would that be the problem ?
Can the motherboard be bad even though it goes that far ?

Try reseat the hard drive, and swap out the ram and see.

qhn , Thanks , i tried that today as well as putting new thermo compound on the cpu . Still no luck .

Do you have another stick of ram, other than the ones that are currently in, to try?

I tried one stick at a time ( has two in it ) . That didn't make any change . So i also tried a stick of pc133 ( instead of the pc100 ) by it self . No difference .
I did notice that right when it changes from the gatway logo and i get the black screen with the blinking _ . The hard drive led does flash green a couple times then stops .

I rechecked the harddrive again and it does work fine in another laptop .

You can try to take a closer loook at the connector between the board and the hard drive.

BTW , i fixed this the problem was from loading windows on a different computer . I finally bought a plug to put the laptop hard drive in a desk and a few tweaks , i put it back in the laptop and let it finish installing .
