Beep (key "stuck") error, and warranty advice

Hi,

I've been having problems with my Inspiron where it beeps constantly after POST. It's the equivalent of holding down a key continuously, which I think is so because at Windows login prompt my password is already completely filled with *

This started happening after I placed and removed the Admin, System and HDD passwords in Dells BIOS setup. I cannot say if this is the cause, but it is when I 1st experienced the beeps. My "W" key is behaving erratic, from not working @ all some time to constantly appearing on screen as if I pressed it (e.g in a DOS prompt window without typing anything "w"s would recurringly appear, and also inbetween text as I type).

The only hardware change I made to the Inspiron was upgrade the memory to 4GB (a month ago). I doubt the upgrade memory is the problem because I put back the original memory the Inspiron came with and it still doing the same.

I ran Dells Diagnostic program. The chance of the beeping going off during it is like 50/50. The 1 time the diagnostic did manage to successfully finish the pre-test (blue screen) without beeping, I successfully ran that "Test memory" (on the 4GB I had installed @ the time), but its started beeping sometime during the 2nd test (think its the "Test system" iirc).

Is there anything else I can try?

Do I need to call Dell support?
With regards to warranty advice, my system came with "1yr limited warranty - collect and return" and "3yr hardware support - next business". I'm concerned about the memory change I made. If Dell support sends out a technician do I need to put back the original memory that came with my Inspiron, or having my new memory there wouldn't void my warranty?

Adding memory does not void your warranty.

it sounds (No Punn Intended) like you do have a stuck key.

If you are still under warranty call dell or try online chat, and get them to fix it.

Don't worry about the added memory, that doesn't do anything negative against the warranty. If Dell sends out a tech he'll be coming with a spare keyboard and it will take him about 15 mins to swap it out and install it. Chances are he won't even look at anything else unless replacing the keyboard doesn't fix the problem. (But I'm pretty sure it will).

Keyboard problems happen pretty often and are about the easiest thing to fix, I've had mine replaced twice because of "sticky" keys. So don't fret, they'll get you up and running in no time.

I hope this helps

Ciao

Update

Now after being packed away in the notebook bag from Sunday I decided to try it out before I phoned Dell Support today, and guess what?.... no beeping! The "W" key seems to be working. Is this normal? I was sure it finally gave up cause the very 1st time it beeped (+ 1 week ago) it only happened like once or twice and sort of went away, but this weekend it didn't stop beeping so I figured it was the end of the line.

From what I learned about other users experience with the local Dell Support is is that a technician only gets sent out as a last resort (if the user unable to fix it with the help of telephone support). I'm guessing I would be wasting my time now that the error has (temporarily) gone away. Btw, my notebook is still covered with that "3year NBD" warranty, yes?

Thanks for the advice guys. Gonna put the new memory back... Vista is a little slow with the 1GB memory that it came with.

I would still contact Dell and tell the the keyboard stops working at times and request a new one be sent to you.
