hi, can anyone tell me how to get sound back on a toshiba portege p4000.the laptop was brought in with no sound and other issues . i have wiped the drive and reinstalled xp pro, and reinstalled the sound driver but still no sound. i uninstalled the sound driver then reintstalled it but no joy and yes i have turned up the volume and made sure the volume control is not muted
I had to do a dell 1300 for the same problem and there is a three step process to intall the sound driver on that model you can`t just intall the driver so i wondered if this toshiba is the same . any help would be much appreciated...thanks

It is gonna be tough with a used machine with known issues.

Any discrepancies within the device manager? Yellow exclamations?

What driver have you tried so far?

hi, there are no yellow exclamations at the side of sound and audio. the driver i installed is `Ali audio accellerator wmd driver off of a laptop drivers disk that i have if thats any use.
and i forgot to mention the keyboard is dodgy the F keys do not work and certain other keys dont work and some keys such as 2 types 2\ the 4 key types 4f and other keys are not working as they should .
I am going to tell the owner it will cost too much to fix being an old laptop but i cant help trying to fix this sound problem

Is this sound problem the same when you use external speakers/headsets?

Let us try again getting the drivers from Toshiba itself:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t.../jsp/home.jsp#

You will see an option to "show older model" next to the Choose Model after you enter Category and Family

hi, i downloaded the driver from this link from the toshiba site and it works .it is the same driver as the one i have on disk but the one from the link works i dont know why.but at least the the sound is back on now all i need to do is find a cheap keyboard..thank you again for your help.
