Inspiron 9300: 6800Go to X300

Hi all,
the nVidia 6800Go (Dell part 0W5373, I guess) video card on my Inspiron 9300 has stopped working properly.
I've ran Dell Diagnostics and it reported an error code "5300: 0119", which suggests that the video memory is damaged.

Now I'm wondering whether I can put an ATI X300 (Dell part 0W5379) found on ebay in place of my fried video card.
The X300 is much cheaper than the 6800Go and I'm not interested in performance at the moment, I just want to fix my laptop.

Would that be compatible?
In the end that ATI card has been extracted from another Inspiron 9300...

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad English

Yes, if the ATI X300 came from another 9300 then it will work. As another check though, the card should look just like the old card. All you will need to do is put it in your computer and install the drivers for the card. Then your computer should work just fine, however, as you have mentioned, you will lose alot of performance (in 3D applications).

The X300 should fit. According to the part number you gave it's the correct card for the I9300.

I hope this helps

Thanks to zzpulp and to Tiburon666!

The seller said me it is a W5378, not a W5379, so the card is an ATI X300 64MB, not 128MB.

Should it fit all the same?

Thanks in advance.

You might have to change over your heatsink from your 6800 Go, so you'll need to compare them. I'll tell you however, that a 64meg X300 is going to be a rather pathetic performer for just about anything. You've got to remember that resolutions that are native for 17" displays contain many more orders of magnitude number of pixels, than the smaller displays the w5378 was designed for.

The W5378 was more commonly found on 15" and smaller laptops. If you can try and find a W5379, or better yet look online (there a many retailers) for a T9487 which is an ATI X600 w/128megs originally for the Latitude D810. This card will fit no problems (you might have to switchout heatsinks) get you very much better performance and nearly as good battery life as the X300 (either ATI card will yeild much better battery life than your current 6800).

Do a google search and you'll find dozens of retaillers selling the T9487 for between $75-150.

I hope this helps

Thanks for the information!

Anyway, I'm not a gamer anymore, so I'm not very interested in 3D performance at the moment. I just want to save money

Do you think I'd have problems or bottlenecks using desktop applications at 1920x1200 with that 64MB X300?

Ciao!

It depends on what kind of applications you're talking about. For most office apps there won't be much of a difference. But for anything that is graphic/media intensive, including many internet apps, you'll notice a hit.

I hope this helps

Battery Performance on a I9300? LOL! These things are tanks...for arm chair use only!

Not a gamer anymore? What happened? I'm 50..love to game. Just curious....

If you play DVD's or Vids often, you notice the performance hit with the X300...Office stuff not so much....
