I purchased this Nook Color specifically because I was taking a very long trip to China and wanted to be able to read without carrying a ton of books. I also liked that it had email capability...

I can't get any infrared devices to stay connected for more than a second or two. I want to use my cell phone as a modem via infrared. I have a nokia 6800 and it connects to my friend's compaq laptop just fine. Any ideas?
Try lowering the speed of the port. Go to device manager, properties on the IR device, advanced tab, and under Maximum Connect Rate select a lower speed. I use 115,200 BPS with my nokia 6100 and that works perfectly.
as thomas b said, the nokia needs to have the connection rate on the computer reduced from the maximum setting. also, if you have changed the phone housing, the after market faceplate may not allow transmission of the ir signal. i found that out on my sony ericsson t610. i solved the problem by drilling a tiny hole where the phone's ir port is.
Perhaps the nokia needs some special protocol or smth. I am not familiar with the 6800 model
Did you try googling? That's how I initially found out about lowering the speed of the IR for the 6100 model. Also, on a more sillier note but it does not hurt to ask: did you install the nokia software and selecting to install the modem for IR? You have to select it when installing Nokia PC Suite 5 anyway :/
Well seems smth wrong with your device then I guess. I am no expert but if the compaq uses the exactly same settings (Speed,Receiver #1,2 protocols) as your 5680 and on yours it doesn't work then smth might be wrong. Is your transmitter dirty maybe or smth? maybe move the phone to a certain angle.
My problem was the same because of the too high speed
I had a lot of trouble with my 6600 until I figured how to positopn it relativly to laptop IR port. Have no problem after I figured that (the IR port on the phone was not in the place I thought)
I'm not exactly sure where the IR port on the phone is, but I have tried it nearly every possible way. When testing it on my friend's notebook, I just had to point the top of the phone toward her IR port. I'll set the phone down and activated IR and let it sit for about 5 minutes pointing toward the IR port, but it will connect for about 5 seconds at most.

oh my god. this is two years later, but THANK YOU!!!!! you solved my problem
