Canon is transitioning their pro cameras to use either both CF and SD or just SD
Not quite. Their entry level is using SD, but lets take a look at anything beyond the Rebel range. On B+H, we have the 50d, the 5d and 1d. All of which take CF, only the 1d also takes SD/SDHC I believe.

Similar story for Nikon(D3, D300, D700), except I don't think any of their professional lines(Beyond entry level SLR) use SD.

Similar story for Olympus, except none of their SLRs use SD, they all use CF(Well and xD, but we will leave that alone for now. Not even their entry level.

I could probably keep going, but those are the three more common ones. Point being that CF still reigns supreme for most professional photographers I know(Well ALL photographers I know).

Apple said that less than 1 percent of their users take advantage of the expresscard slot.
This I can believe considering you still have peripherals transitioning from PCMCIA to expresscard.

Some things, like your eSATA can't be done over USB or FW, but pretty much everything else can, including your high end audio stuff.
While you are correct in the first part, there are specific reasons to deal with expresscard over firewire as well. I know people that will deal with the expresscard RMEs over the Firewire because of latency for instance, inheirt to firewire.
