Which To Use

Needing help in deciding which old notebook to keep up and running for my 6 year old.
I have 3 to choose from ….
1. Gateway Solo 1200 – 800 MHz, 320meg
2. Compaq Presario 1700T – 650 MHz, 512meg
3. Hp Pavilion n5150 – 600 MHz, 320meg

I will be running XP Home on a 100 gig hard drive.

Want to use the best for speed and performance.

Thanks

#2 Compaq, simply because it supports more ram, which is what Windows needs.

I'd go for either of the first two. What kind of programs are you intending to run for him? If they ram intensive either a cheap upgrade or the second one.

The Gateway needs nothing but to put the hard drive in (it only has a 10 and is slow).
The Compaq is in need of a thermal sensor (15.00) and ram (40.00).
The HP needs a hard drive caddy (12.00)

The Gateway will still be slow with the lack of ram and I am not sure about the 100gb drive in there. Same as with the HP. Saying that, the Compaq seems to have more issues than the other 2.

I vote to get her a good 2nd hand laptop that you probably can find for less than 200$, intead of investing $$ and time to fix the other ones up.

Can you swap out some of the RAM to put the most RAM in the fastest and newest machine? If it's compatible it shouldn't be a problem to do this.

I believe that the mentioned models are already at max ram allowed. That is a kicker.

SO was playing around looking for a cheap price for new thermal for the Compaq and came across a possible processor upgrade.
Can't seem to find any info about the board, if it could handle a faster processor.

Any one able to help with this?

You can play with a 900-1000ghz range cpu, at your own risk. I popped in a 1.1ghz on my HP N5470 before with no issue. Taking in consideration these good old dinosaurs, you would have a good chance; just don't quote me on it

Can't find any specs or information about the motherboard. But I suppose dropping $20 on a processor isn't that big of a deal.

Yep, that was how I did on my HP, 15$ for the AMD1.1ghz
