IBM R40 outdated?

Hi guys, I am new to this forum. I am in need of help with my dilemma. My wife just started a job as a on-line tutor. Our IBM R40 W/ 1GM of ram is very slow. She is using a AT&T USB connect Mercury connect device on her lunch hour to connect to the web. The problems are: #1 slow processing. #2 slow on the web. #3 low battery life even with a new battery.
My question is, should we upgrade to a newer laptop. I have no problem with doing so but our budget will only alow $600-$650 max. If we do need to upgrade. Can you point me to something that will work for her needs. This is something I need to do this weekend. Thanks for the support in advance!

same comment.

Slow processing and slow on the net can be attributed to system not being tuned up and router and ISP performance.

Some mentioned that I may have a slow 4200 HDD. Would that make this laptop run slow? I just did a defrag and it took about 45 minutes. How can I find what HDD I have?

You can try Everest Home or Sandra Lite* to check out your hardware environment. 4200rpm is a bit slow, that could be part of a bottleneck.

Defrag and chkdsk are good to speed the drive up. Disable un-needed startup processes and services, review the AV software can also help.

4200 is really slow, but better for battery life.
For better performance use a 5400 to 7200 HDD. You can also go with a solid state HDD. They are cheaper now and offer better performance than the regular HDD, plus better battery life. Also, try and upgrade your ram to at least 1.5-2gigs of ram.
that laptop series uses ram for video, so you are not really getting the full 1 gig.
Also, check that you don't have a lot of start up software booting up when you turn on the laptop.
I took all of the visualization off my x61s. It loads a lot faster.

Sounds like you have a virus that's eating up all the memory and CPU. I've had this situation before. Check the task manager to see what processes are taking up the resources.
