CD's Play, But Not DVD's

I just purchased a used Dell D620 laptop running Win XP Pro, Service Pack 3.

Windows Media Player will play audio CD's but not movie DVD's. I inserted several movie DVDs (copies and originals), and they aren't being recognized. I don't get any error messages either.

The laptop has PowerDVD decoder installed but I can't tell if it's working or if I need to update it. I bought the laptop via Ebay store and there's no way to contact the previous owner.

So I today installed the K-Lite decoder, but when I run Media Player Classic there is no option to play DVD's.

The laptop has a TSST DVD/CD-ROM drive. When I check its status, it says it's working properly. However the location says 0, if that makes a difference.

Also, the same exact scenario is occuring on my desktop running XP pro and WinDVD. That one has a ATAPI 52X DVD/CD drive. So it doesn't appear the drives are the problem.

Do I need to uninstall these decoders and just purchase a new one? I'd like to avoid the purchase option, naturally. Thanks for any help!

Give VLC Player a try. Free, and has it's own codecs.

I just downloaded VLC, after I uninstalled K-Lite. VLC will play audio CD but not DVD. I then performed CMD>dvdupgrd/detect...and it said no decoder detected.

Kind of weird in that it at least detected the K-lite decoder.

So back to square one.....

If VLC can't play it you've likely got a problem with your DVD drive. All codecs needed to play DVDs are built in to VLC.

The fact that you are experiencing the same problem in two completely seperate machines in your household leads me to suspect you have a problem with some software you have installed on both machines.

I'm guessing it's not a hardware problem. Are you able to read data DVDs? Can you burn to a blank DVD?
