im wondering how much difference i would see if i bought the 8700m 512mbx2. i have the m1730 with 8700m 256mbx2. i can't afford the 8800gtx. unless someone is willing to sell one to me for $450. is the 8700m 512mb sli pretty close to the 8800m gtx 512mb in performance?

th extra memory usually makes the difference in the higher resolution graphics, and adds an over all increase in speed for the GPU performance.

It would really come down to how much your paying for the 512 meg cards vs selling your 256 meg cards.

And the 8800m GTX blows the 8700 out of the water mainly due to the number of shaders, memory bandwidth, etc. it benchmarks about 55 % faster

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the upgrade. I would say more but I have to go now. I just can't imagine the performance of the SLI cards warranting a $200+ upgrade.

Just so you know the pricing on the 8800 are going to drop dramatically as the 9800 GT SLI 1GB is out to replace the 8700SLI and the 9800GTX will replace the current 8800GTX. As far as performance diff? the 8800GTX perform EXACTLY like the 9800GT since its the same card rebranded.

I Imagine soon since the 8800 and 8700 options are no longer on dells site. You should in fact contact the spare parts department and see what it costs now.

i was chating with a tech a few days ago, and he said that he hasn't heard anything about the 9800. 8800s are still $1000

give it a few days but get in contact with the sales department and see what the 8800, and 9800 run for. the general sales and tech people will not know spare parts pricing so make sure you get to DELL SPARE PARTS dept.
