The Redundant Question of "What to Buy"

I am sorry but I really have to ask one of these myself. I've skimmed this site for the past month now just about and I have to say..You all seem very intelligent. Possibly the best and most extensive laptop forum and website I've EVER seen. So kudos to you all on that. I had to register just so I could ask some questions myself. I really need a new laptop. A gaming laptop preferably. Something with power.

Here is my current rig:

1.90 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core TK-57
Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1
3gb of RAM
DirectX 10
ATI Radeon X1200 Series
231gb of hard drive space

If you guys need to know anything else let me know. I don't know AS MUCH about computers as I really would like to, and need to for that matter. I don't know anything about graphics cards, sound cards, etc. I read information upon information and slowly learn what is good and what isn't but I always come short in terms of what I really need to know heh.

So, I am asking you guys for your help. As you can see from above my HUGE problem is my very obsolete (I didn't know when I bought this laptop like a month or so ago lol..) graphics card. It sucks. It doesn't have pixel shader 3.0 for God's sake. (My processor could use an updating too..).
I just need a powerful laptop. Something that won't freeze while playing Oblivion, something that can handle me putting Mass Effect on my computer, something that can handle future games like Diablo III or ANY game for that matter. I was a HUGE fan of Alienware for years (could never even buy the laptops but still subscribed to the newsletter haha..). But I always hear how they overcharge for what you can buy elsewhere for the same quality so..I kind of stopped looking in that direction. The right move?

I appreciate all you guys answering, who do anyway heh. Price is no option at this point but if you could avoid going above..$2,500..or $3,000 that'd be great. Preferabbly nothing TOO expensive though.

And feel free to get "creative" and "build" me a custom laptop. Like on a website or something that you think is right for me. I MAY just be able to compensate you if you do.

Thanks. : )

For a 15" notebook, you might be interested in the Asus G50Vt-B1 here

It's got the basics of what you're looking for. Specifically, I'd recommend a notebook with an Nvidia 9800M, GTX 260M, or GTX 280M, or an ATI Mobility Radeon 4850, 4860, or 4870 video card and a current-generation Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.5 Ghz or faster (processor numbers P8700, P9600, T9400, T9550, or T9800)

Thanks for your suggestion. *adds that to future computer list*

Any others would also be appreciated.

Also, a quick question Djembe, those are graphic cards that are adequate in terms of having appropriate pixel shaders, higher memory (256mb+), etc? And also a good processor (even though that seems fast because mine says 1.9ghz but when I run tests it says it clocks speeds at almost 5ghz)?

the graphics cards I mentioned all have a high number of unified shaders, a 256-bit memory bus and will typically have either 512MB or 1GB of dedicated video memory.

and the processors I listed are all dual-core CPUs with a 1066 Mhz front side bus speed. I don't know the tests you're running, but it's possible that they compare your processor with a (much less powerful) Pentium 4. A Core 2 Duo processor like the ones I listed would be significantly more powerful than yours at similar clock speeds.

Technology and their initials and whatnot. -_-

Thanks for all the information. Glad to see you listed one SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful.

Others please. : D

Out of those choices though, which two do you HIGHLY recommend (if money was no factor) The second, right? And wouldn't I customize that one to stick a 4gb of RAM in? I'm trying to see if that one offers more powerful components. (I need to gain more knowledge on this type of stuff heh..)
