Upgraded the e1705... - Page 2

I think the main reason for people not jumping on the SSD bandwagon is because of the price per GB is still so much higher than with HD.

A 256GB SSD will cost you nearly $500. That's $1.95 per GB.
A 500GB HD will cost you about $100. That's $0.20 per GB.

A 250GB HD will cost you about $60. That's $0.24 per GB. (To compare it with similar size)

Although the main benefit of going SSD, I think, is the fact that is can sustain a MUCH higher g-force if it's dropped. In fact, I think other parts of the laptop would start to break before the SSD gave out.

Thank you guys. You confirm my research about SSD.
Although another benefit would be that they are silent, not that HD are this loud, but still... )
I'll soon upgrade to one of these 320 or 500mb HD models.

Ugh

I totally forgot to order an external enclosure. Got the hard drive and I don't feel like burning everything I want to keep onto a DVD for backups.

For those wanting that hard drive, here is an even better deal.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...FnuBRh4KXe7GqQ

Use live.com, search "tigerdirect" and enter through the live site for 12% off. Drive is now $61.60. Send in rebate form for $20 back from Hitachi, bringing it to $41.60. Add $6.99 for shipping.

Thinking about ordering 4Gb of RAM to go with the laptop now. $47.98 shipped for some G.Skill with 4-4-4-12 timings, my current RAM is 5-5-5-15. Not sure I'd see any real world performance increases though, but it's still faster none-the-less.

Now I just gotta talk myself into submitting the order.

hi, new to the forums, not new to upgrading my e1705, I have already upgraded my cpu from the t2350 to the t7600, and the ram from 1gb to 2gb to 4gb, next is a 7200rpm harddrive. Either 250, 320 or 500gb but Dell says that the 320 and 500gb harddrives could have "undesired" results. i plan on maxing this out and all thats left is the harddrive and the video card. is it safe to use the 500gb? i know if it fits it should work but i dont want adverse affects on my mobo

No idea. :P it's probably a bios thing like EVERY problem Im running into myself.

Try it out and just return it if it doesn't work can't you? For the record the mini external drives are just laptop ones, but slower. At any rate, they might be good to use as a test at 500gb to see if it works, then just return it and buy a 7200rpm version on the net. Or use that one. I do like 7200rpm, dont know how much faster it really is....I just like the big manly numbers.

I have been using a 320gb 7200rpm for 1 year now and don't have any problem with it.

there ya go!
good enough for me, i only recently found out about updates after an OS crash >.<, but i was wondering if the A10 could support it, sounds good for me, 500gb @ 7200 rpm should do finely , if not 320 can suffice
post #34 of 43
Yeah the A10 will allow lots of stuff, probably even SSD I'd imagine. dell has a funny way of doing that.
What? There's a new A10 bios under way?
A10 has been out since December 1, 2009 unless i got it backwards and its January 12th, 2009. I'm more inclined to believe the former rather than later. I may or may not be wrong, but I also think this Bios lets the computer recognize the FULL 4 gb of ram if installed. Also Nvidia support on it, apparently dell was tired of all the complaints i.e. everyone on here made a difference, good job
post #37 of 43
^^^^That doesn't make any sense. I'm sure it fixed some nvidia heat issues, would definately add support for stuff, but you can't physcially change what a chipset can support through the bios. The chipset's limit is 32 bit 667mhz.
I don't see how they'd be able to address more than 3.26gb with that issue.
If so though....damn why don't they update the m1710's bios already.....I'd rather not flash back and loose my precious overclock support :P

But yeah savat, grab it from dell.
The chipset is limited to 4 GB

They can play with the BIOS all they want, but it will not go above 4 GB

but i will not buy the 6 or the 8. at that point, id want something newer to take advantage of all that ram.
