Computer keeps restarting

HELP!! My computer was running Vista and just randomly restarted itself then kept resetting over and over. One time I got it to the screen where I can select to boot to safe mode but when I selected safe mode, it started doing the restart thing all over again. After that time, I haven't been able to get it back to the screen that allows me to select what mode to boot to. I can get into BIOS now and that's it.

Computer specs:
HP Pavillion dv9310us
Turion 64
120GB hdd
2 GB Ram
Running Vista Home Premium 32bit

Let me know other info you need.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ok.. so I was able to get it to the "There was an error during startup.." screen and selected Safe Mode. This time, it went to a black screen and just hung there. I haven't touched it in hopes that it's just taking ridiculously long to boot, but so far it has been 5 minutes and I don't think it's going to boot.

I'm going to turn it off for now. Please, any help is much appreciated as I REALLY need this computer. It has all of my work on it

Try performing a repair on the OS, this way you still have your personal data intact.

it may be virus or more importantly it may be some recent software installations...uninstall the s/w using the recovery cd..and then reboot

I'm not sure what it was but I left it alone for a few hours then did an OS repair from the boot disk and it seems to be doing alright so far. I think it may have been the most recent Vista update. I just finished backing all of my work up to an external hard drive. Don't want this to happen again! Thanks for the help!
