m7700i cant re-install windows? - Page 2

Yes, 7700s (also known as Clevo d900t) are known for their heat issues. This is what happens when you pack a P4 & high performance GPU into a 17" and run the fans at only 10% idle, 20-30% load. With these settings the P4 idles at 60C and 70C load.

I believe my laptop has lasted as long as it has because I've used GetThermal to up the fan trip points to bring the temps down and run fans at max when gaming. I have run this thing nearly 24/7 for over 4 years. I admit, I did replace the thermal interface with Arctic Silver 5 for both the CPU and GPU.

By the way, do you expect this thing to last more than 30 min away from a socket? My battery is old, but I only get 2 min w/out power and originally had only 40 min when the machine was new.

i have arcticsilver on my cpu and could it be the cpu? the gpu is fine, the linux live cd detects the vid card fine at the right res too. i have a couple other cpus i could try, is it worth it? or would it only be the mobo?

It sounds like the controller on the motherboard. From what I understand, the excess heat from the CPU / GPU is able to reach the controller and accelerate failure (not sure where exactly it is on the board).

oh alright i see makes sense but if we can find out where i can send the board to a friend who can check it out, but only if i know what is what lol

I'm finishing up some work and about to go to bed (3:30 here). If you post HQ screens and search Google, hopefully someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

thanks again for your help, ive sent some HQ images to a mobo repair friend(another one) and well see how that turns out.

non-raid driver install problem

I replaced my RAID with a single HD, downloaded the non-RAID drivers from alienware, and put them on a floppy disk. When I try to boot from the disk it says non system disk, please replace and strike a key. Any ideas?

It is only a driver. They require you to install them while installing the operating system. Just placing them on a floppy and trying to boot will not suffice.

If you are unsure of how to properly install something, you should get in the habit of checking a knowledge base from the company first.

Here is a link to Alienware's article on installing windows on RAID and Non-RAID. Scroll to the section talking about installing Windows on one HDD.
