Dell Studio XPS 16-lcd screen colors are over-kill!

I have seen this issue posted online (via Google) but I haven't been able to find a resolution to the problem (because I don't feel like sitting here reading through hundreds of pages in forums or trying to search using the perfect keyword to pull up my answer). So here it goes...

The color saturation on the 1080p screens that come with the Studio XPS 16 are extremely over-kill. This notebook comes with a ATI card and not NVidia (I'm use to NVidia and being able to use the "digital vibrance" setting to 'calm down' the over-kill of the colors. However ATI's setting for this is greyed out and can't be accessed!

I called Dell support and of course after trying to explain the problem about 10 different times to the same rep he told me to call ATI! I was like uhm I didn't buy the card from ATI, I bought it from you via the complete system-it's up to you to support it, NOT ATI! He ignored what I said and gave me tech support number for ATI in Canada (which I'm not calling because I don't have international calling on my cell phone). I can't believe Dell is refusing to support their own hardware now lol. This is nuts!

Does anyone else here have this system and if so, are you able to tell me how to 'calm down' these colors on the screen? They are just too much and if I can't get this solved this thing is going back, it's almost blinding me to even look at the screen (turning down the brightness of the screen doesn't help-it just darkens the screen) and there also doesn't seem to be a physical color selection with ATI to lower or brighten the colors either). I don't understand what is going on with this (it's either the screen or the graphics card that is the problem here. I've tested it out on 3 other machines and they all have the same problem (I've had to reorder the machine 3 different times because of nasty scratches on the casing of the system-on my 2500.00 system that is! People are just not valueing their jobs anymore and in this economy I can't understand why.

Anyways I hope someone can help me out here with this color issue, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks

This is Dell's first 100% color gamut screen. Knowing this comparing it to another screen will look bizarre since many people who purchased the XPS M1730 had a similar issue. The first thing you can always try is a newer version of the ATI drivers if you havnt already tried that. Next thing you can try is 3rd party programs which allow you to modify the color saturation similar to what the NV Control panel allows you to do. Finally you could just have a totally messed up screen but give the first 2 options a shot first.

I'm going to try desktop modded drivers provided by driverhaven (I remember a few years ago when I had a notebook that had a ATI card in it I had to go that route because of certain options that were greyed out using Dell's drivers). As far as me having a bad screen I doubt that is the case, like I said the problem has happened on 3 machines (same model) so it's not my particular screen and the complaints are across the board on the net.

As far as 3rd party programs go can you recommend one if driverhaven doesn't work out? I'm not familiar with any 3rd party programs that do this.

HI,

I am not sure of the complete solution and even don't know why the colors are so solid. May be because of the RGB backlit lcd screen. But one way I can help you to do some adjustments where you can see some changes and could get some pleasent look of nvedia graphics card.

First update the drivers of ATI Catalist Control Center from www.support.dell.com which was recently released. Then on the desktop right click and open the ATI catalist Control Center. Goto Notebook Panel Properties node and select the option Avivo Color. In the right hand window reduce the saturation as per your requirements. Addition to that you can go to color option just below 3D. In that select all channels and reduce Gamma, brighness and contrast. If you think the colors of Red and Green are more solid then instead of selecting all channels select individual color and do the adjustments. When you are selecting individual colors for adjustments make sure you click Apply for each color change.

Hope this may help you a little bit instead of going through some 3rd party softwares.
